Mary Elizabeth McDavid Winegar
Mary Elizabeth McDavid Winegar, 92, of Kingsport, Tenn., passed away Monday, Jan. 21, 2013 at her home.
Born Oct. 12, 1920 in the Daniel Boone community, she was one of nine children born to William Engle and Jennie Pierson McDavid. She was educated at Shoemaker High School, where she graduated in 1939.
After graduation, she enrolled at Johnson City Business College and later returned to study at the University of Virginia. Mary was employed by Tennessee Eastman for several years and retired from Virginia National Bank, where she started as a teller and rose to the rank of operations manager of the Gate City branch.
In recent years, she attended Fordtown Baptist Church and the United Methodist Church in Fort Myers, Fla.
She was involved in numerous historical organizations as a member of the Carter's Fort Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution, a charter member of Elijah Cross II USD 1812, member of Wilderness Trail Colonial Dames 17th Century, member of Ellen Renshaw House Chapter United Daughters of the Confederacy and member of Lucinda Heatherly Daughters of Union Veterans of Civil War 1861-1865.
Mrs. Winegar also served in her local community as past president of Weber City Elementary PTA, charter member of the Lee-Wise-Scott chapter of the American Bank Women's Association, member of the American Institute of Banking and as an associate member of the NABAC. In her young adulthood, she was active in numerous local and civic initiatives.
She married Ralph F. Dougherty in September 1940 and their daughter, Barbara, was born in 1952. After the death of her husband in 1968, she married Charles W. Winegar in 1978 and the couple relocated to Fort Myers, Fla.
She was preceded in death by her first husband in 1968; her second husband in 1992; her parents; her siblings, Mae McDavid, Maxie McDavid Marcum, Maggie McDavid Rhoton, Audley McDavid, Minnie McDavid Hensley, Homer McDavid and Allen McDavid, who died in infancy.
Her survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara Dougherty Bishop and husband, Danny, Kingsport, Tenn.; her grandson, Joseph Martin Gayeski, Kingsport, Tenn.; her sister and brother-in-law, June McDavid Corley and husband, Bob, Kingsport, Tenn.; her sister-in-law, Ann Broadwater Dougherty, Nickelsville; her special friend, Ruth Carter Fugate, Gate City; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and friends.
The family will receive friends Wednesday, January 23, 2013, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Gate City Funeral Home. Members of the Carter's Fort Chapter NSDAR will conduct a special service during the funeral services planned for 7 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. The Rev. Riley Boy will officiate at the service.
Graveside services will be conducted Thursday, January 24, 2013 at 11 a.m. at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City.
Pallbearers will be Rex McCarty, Ryland Jennings, Corbett Gillenwater, Corey Gillenwater, Chris Dougherty and Tim Dougherty.
Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Overmountain Men Chapter Sons of the American Revolution.
