Fred A. Wheatley, Jr., 52, of Nickelsville, VA passed away Saturday, September 10, 2011 at Holston Valley Medical Center.

Mr. Wheatley was born June 16, 1959 in Kingsport, TN. He was a graduate of Twin Springs High School in the class of 1977. He was a veteran of the US Air Force, serving 17 years as a Telecommunications Specialist. He returned to Nickelsville three years ago after living many years in Omaha, NE. Since his return home, he has enjoyed being at the Wheatley family farm and gardening, participating in the Nickelsville Farmers Market and spending time with his friends at B&K Farm supply.

He is preceded in death by his father Fred Wheatley, Sr., brother-in-law, David Harbin and nephew, Clint Harbin.

Mr. Wheatley is survived by his mother, Anna Carter Wheatley of the home, sisters Patricia Minton and husband, Roy of Nickelsville, VA and Debbie Harbin of Maynardville, TN, niece, Amy Porter and husband, Kevin of Gate City, VA, nephew, David Harbin of Tucson, AZ, special great niece, Emily Porter of Gate City, VA, special family friend, Thelma Poole of Nickelsville, VA and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, September 13, 2011 at Gate City Funeral Home and other times at the residence. Services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of Gate City Funeral Home by Rev. Brandon Berg and Rev. Joe Barber. Music will be provided by Steve and Flo Minton.

Burial will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 14, 2011 at Temple Hill Cemetery. Family and friends will meet at the funeral home at 10:00 a.m. Ronald Wheatley, Roy Minton, Kevin Porter, Joe Carter, Craig Carter, Glen Carter, John Flanary, Bill Vicars and Glen Broadwater will serve as pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Nickelsville United Methodist Church, PO Box 70, Nickelsville, VA.
