Ezra L. Wheatley, 81, 375 Gibson Road, died Saturday, December 01, 2007 at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.
Mr. Wheatley was a native of Scott County and a resident of Nickelsville his entire life. In addition to his parents, N.W. and Callie Salyer Wheatley. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Carmen Bumgardner and Ethel Brown; three brothers, Ireland Wheatley, Fred Wheatley Sr., and R.W. "Jack" Wheatley; one niece, two nephews and one great nephew.
Mr. Wheatley was employed at Holston Defense for many years and served one term as Commissioner of Revenue of Scott County in the sixties. He was also a cattle farmer and loved spending time on his farm.
Survivors include his wife of 36 years, Maye Hubble Wheatley, Nickelsville, VA; one step daughter, Vicki Miller and husband, Greg, Boone, NC; one granddaughter, Cindy Clark, Church Hill, TN; grandson, Eric Miller, Boone, NC; nieces, Patricia Minton and husband, Roy, Nickelsville, VA, Debbie Harbin, Maynardville, TN, Velena Wheatley, Dungannon, VA; sister-in-law, Ann Wheatley, Nickelsville, VA; nephews, Buford Salyer and wife, Irene, Kingsport, TN, Ronald Wheatley, Dungannon, VA, Fred Wheatley, Omaha, NE and Robert Wheatley and wife, Mary, Kingsport, TN; several nieces and nephews, special friends, R.N. Greear, Ezra Patrick, David and Michael Peters and a host of others too numerous to mention.
The family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, December 4, 2007 at Gate City Funeral Home and other times at the residence. Masonic services will be conducted at 6:45 p.m. by the Nickelsville Masonic Lodge #0173. Services will be at 7 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Fred White and Rev. Henry Meade officiating. Eulogy will be given by Thomas Hillman. Music will be provided by the Bowlin Sisters and harmonica by Bill Smith.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 5, 2007 at Nickelsville Cemetery, Nickelsville, VA. The family will meet at 10 a.m. at the funeral home to go in procession to the cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Dennis Culbertson, Bobby Horne, David Salyer, Greg Miller, Roy Minton and R.C. Greear.
Honorary pallbearers will be Oakley McDavid, Leon Marshall, Everett Cox, George Francisco, Jimmy McConnell, Billy Byington, Sherman Wallace, Eddie Skeen, Henry L. Robinson, Tucker Coleman, Jerry Vicars, Stanley Bateman, Johnny Hillman, Pete Odle and all his cattle market friends.
