Anna Carter Wheatley, 89, Nickelsville, VA passed away, Sunday, January 11, 2015 at her residence.
Born in Slant, VA on March 27, 1925 to the late Emmit Patrick and Maude Maria Lawson Carter.
She worked as a telephone operator in Kingsport, TN in the early 40’s and later owned and operated Ann’s Fabrics Center in Nickelsville, VA for 26 years. She was a member of the Nickelsville United Methodist Church. Anna was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and sister. She has numerous friends in the surrounding communities. She was an excellent seamstress and enjoyed quilting.
In addition to her parents, her husband, Fred Wheatley; son, Fred Wheatley, Jr.; sons-in-law, David L. Harbin and Roy Minton; grandson, Clint A. Harbin and brother, Eugene Carter preceded her in death.
Survived by her daughters, Patricia Minton, Nickelsville, VA, Debbie Harbin, Maynardville, TN; grandchildren, Amy Porter and husband, Kevin, Gate City, VA, David Harbin, Jr. , Benson, AZ and special great granddaughter, Emily Porter; sisters, Inez Dean, Ft. Blackmore, VA, Evelyn Brickey and husband, Jim, Gate City, VA; brothers, Fred Carter, Kingsport, TN, Glen Carter and wife, Matilda, Ft. Blackmore, VA; several nieces and nephews; special friends and caregivers, Thelma Poole and Frieda Sluss; along with Gary Cox whom she loved like a son.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m., Wednesday, January 14, 2015 at the Gate City Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Joe Barber, Robert Carbary and Rev. Faith Ramer officiating. Steve and Flo Minton will provide the music.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, January 15, 2015 at Temple Hill Memorial Gardens, Castlewood, VA. Craig Carter, Joe Carter, David Harbin, Kevin Porter, Gary Cox and Alan Hammonds will serve as pallbearers.
Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home by 9:45 a.m. to go in procession to the graveside service.
In lieu of flowers the family asked that donations be sent to the Nickelsville United Methodist Church Bldg. Fund, P.O. Box 70, Nickelsville, VA 24271 or to the charity of one’s choice.
