Dr. James Miller Thornton, 84, Gate City, VA passed away, Wednesday, April 7, 2010 at Wellmont Hospice House, Bristol, TN.
Dr. Thornton was born in Culpeper, VA, and grew up in his beloved Rappahannock County, a son of the late Philip Lee and Mildred Miller Thornton.
He was a 1951 graduate of Virginia Tech. He graduated from the University of Georgia with a degree in Veterinary Medicine in 1955, beginning his practice in Scott County, VA. He practiced throughout Virginia, Tennessee, and Kentucky for over forty years, specializing in Tennessee Walking Horses.
He proudly served his country during World War II.
He was a member of the Community Fellowship Baptist Church of Gate City, VA.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Mildred Thornton Fletcher and Margaret Thornton Brown and brother, Philip Lee Thornton.
Surviving are his wife of fifty-eight years, Betty Meade Thornton, Gate City, VA, daughters, Elizabeth (Betsy) Bledsoe and husband, Randy, Gate City, VA, and Ann Thornton Lacy and husband, Randy, Elizabethton, TN , and, son, James Miller Thornton, Jr. and wife, Todd, Allentown, N.J.; grandchildren, Kate Jennings Taylor, Kelsey Jennings Jones, Jake Jennings, James Thornton Lacy, Eleisha Ann Lacy, James M. Thornton, III, and Schuyler Todd Thornton; one great grandchild, Eriannah Denise Earnest; along with many very special nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family will receive friends from 4-6 p.m., Friday, April 9, 2010 at the Gate City Funeral Home. A memorial service will be conducted at 6:00 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. Darrel Fletcher officiating. Judy McConnell, soloist, Schuyler Thornton, flutist, and, Francie Henard, violinist will provide music.
