William "Bill" Orben Thompson, 87, Duffield, VA passed away, Friday evening, September 2, 2011 at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.

Mr. Thompson was born in Slant, VA in Scott County on February 2, 1924 to the late Thomas and Callie Rhodes Thompson.

He was a member of Durham's Chapel Church. He was employed with Hammond Organ Company for 19 years. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving during World War II.

Known as "The Fiddle Man", he was a well known fiddle player throughout Scott County and Chicago, IL for many years, and upon being saved, he played with several gospel groups.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Vida Carroll Hood and a brother, Ray Thompson.

Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Velma Cole Thompson, Duffield, VA; daughters, Brenda Reed, Des Plaines, IL, and Wanda Tatosion, Palatine, IL; sons, Roy Thompson, Kingsport, TN, Gary Lynn Thompson, Grand Rapids, MI, and Floyd Samuel Thompson, Elgin, IL; 8 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren; sister, Ruth Perry, Ft. Blackmore, VA; and several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m., Wednesday, September 7, 2011 at the Gate City Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 7 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Terry Rhoton, Rev. Fred Gillenwater, and Rev. Cecil Kern officiating. Durham's Chapel Quartet will provide the music.

Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, September 8, 2011 at the Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, VA. Roy Thompson, Floyd Thompson, Don Perry, Keith Overbay, Danny Cole and James Cole will serve as pallbearers.
