Duffield, VA – Mabel Francis Sturgill, 68, went to be with the Lord Friday, March 13, 2009 with family by her side after a courageous battle with cancer. The prayer she held closest to her heart was the Serenity Prayer which reads, God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change; courage to change the things I can; and wisdom to know the difference.
She was born in Scott County, VA March 22, 1940 to the late Willie Marshal Fritz and Gracie Ann Lane Fritz. She lived there all her life, where she married on January 12, 1959 to the late Hagan Edward Sturgill and spent 32 years together and had a family during that time. Mrs. Sturgill was a homemaker and a caregiver to her special needs son for 43 years of her life until the Lord called him home. She was a mother, grandmother, sister and best friend. She called herself "Mam maw Mabel" to all the children she met. She loved them all like her own grandchildren. She enjoyed mowing her lawn and gardening. She loved being outside even to just to walk around. Most of all she loved her family. She will be greatly missed and remembered by the people that knew her.
Including her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Hagan Edward Sturgill; a son, Larry Wayne Sturgill; grandson, Kevin Dewayne Dorton; sisters, Hazel and Pansy Fritz; three brothers, Leonard, Nelson and Robert Fritz and a life time friend, Virginia Ellen Bowen.
Survivors include four daughters, Brenda Berry and special friend, George Hobbs III, Blackwater, VA, Wanda and husband, Terry Dorton, Ft. Blackmore, VA, Melissa and husband, Gregory Christian, Big Stone Gap, VA and Judy and husband, James Roberts, Duffield, VA; grandchildren, Jennifer and husband, Derrick Belanger, Jason Berry and fiancée, Crystal Romine, Brian Berry, Brandy and Jessica Berry, Michael Dorton and fiancée, Maggie Begley, Joseph Dorton, Bradley Dorton, Allan Christian and wife, Maria, Tabitha Christian and Amanda Christian; great grandchildren, Jayden Berry and Payton Berry and all the other kids who knew her as Mam maw. Sisters and brothers-in-law, Georgie Smith, OH, Pauline and Ed Bambalough, Duffield, VA, Louise and E.C. Bledsoe, Blackwater, VA, Linda and Ted Ford, TN, Betty and Darrell Lane, Duffield, VA; brothers and sister-in-law, Fred Fritz, Duffield, VA, Billy and Debbie Fritz, Kingsport, TN; several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Sunday, March 15, 2009 at Gate City Funeral Home and other times at Mrs. Sturgills residence. Services will be at 8 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Evangelist Garry Hood and Evangelist Kenneth Neeley. Music will be provided by Garry Hood and singers.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, March 16, 2009 at Adams Cemetery, Duffield, VA. The family will meet at the funeral home at 12:00 p.m. to go in procession to the cemetery for the graveside service.
Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
The family would like to give a special thanks to Dr.DaSilva and all the nursing staff at Kingsport Hematology/Oncology of Kingsport, Dr.Coen and all the nursing staff at Kingsport Radiation, Amedisys Home Health nurse Holly and Hospice nurses, Susan, Lisa, Patsy and Freda.
