Joe Mark Stewart, 70. Gate City, VA passed away, Saturday, November 3, 2012 at Indian Path Medical Center after a long fought battle with cancer.
Mr. Stewart was born in Huntsville, AL on February 6, 1942 to the late Raymond Mark and Gracie Lucile Compton Stewart.
He received his Bachelor of Science Degree from Tennessee Technological University at Cookeville, TN and worked as a Soil Conservationist with USDA Soil Conservation Service for 29 years. He worked for Solstas Lab for 15 years after his retirement from USDA.
He was a member of Hiltons Memorial United Methodist Church.
In addition to his parents, his brother, Bob Stewart preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Phyllis Ann McDavid Stewart, Gate City, VA; daughter, Jennifer Stewart Glenn and husband, Andy, Yuma, VA; son, Jason Stewart and wife Ryan, Richmond, VA; grandchildren, Gabriel Glenn and Nate Glenn, both of Yuma, VA; sisters, Doris Elder and husband, Bobby, Winchester, TN. Joy Shackelford, Pulaski, TN, and Virginia "Ginger" Hanserd, Prospect, TN; brother, Merritt Stewart and wife, Betty, Prospect, TN; mother-in law, Maggie McDavid, Gate City, VA; along with several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, November 6, 2012 at the Gate City Funeral Home and other times at the residence of his daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Andy Glenn. Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Pastor Will Shewey and Pastor Todd Adams officiating. A Eulogy will be given by Eugene McClellan. Music will be provided by Gerald Compton and Ryan Stewart.
Graveside services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, November 7, 2012 at the Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, VA. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Members of the Gate City Civitan Club and his friends at Solstas Lab will serve as honorary pallbearers.
The family wishes to convey a special thanks to the doctors and staff at the University of Virginia Medical Center and Indian Path Medical Center for their loving care of Joe.
