Shirley June Mann Starnes, 72, passed away Friday, May 8, 2009 at her residence with her loving family. Shirley was born May 3, 1937 on Copper Creek in Scott County, VA. She was preceded in death by her father, Arless Mann and her grandparents. She was a 1955 graduate of Shoemaker High School, Gate City, VA and a 1957 graduate of Virginia Interment College. She was married in December 1957 to Bruce D. Starnes. Shirley lived her early years on Copper Creek in Scott County, VA but moved with her family to Arlington, VA in February 1968. She lived in Scott County, VA again in 1995-1996. She enjoyed being a homemaker and derived many happy hours doing arts, crafts and oil paintings of landscapes. She took great pride in her cooking and oil paintings. She taught arts and crafts in local private schools, churches and was a Cub Scout leader. She was of the Baptist faith and was a born again Christian. Her survivors include her mother, Thelma Blair Mann; husband of 51 years, Bruce D. Starnes; sons, Gordon Brent Starnes, Carter Blair Starnes; Adam Mann Starnes and fianc'ee, Lana Oswald, brother, Johnny Milburn Mann and wife, Freida, granddaughters, Savannah Hope Starnes, Nicole Carpenter and Ashley Oswald; great grandchildren, Kenneth Carpenter, Jr. and Kayla Carpenter. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Tuesday, May 12, 2009 at Gate City Funeral Home. Services will be at 1 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Clayton Williams officiating. Music will be provided by Carolyn Maddox and Wilma Brooks. Burial will follow the service at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, VA. Edisol Musick, Buddy Lane, Roy Quillen, Jimmy Hillman ,Tucker Hillman, Warner Brickey and Carter Starnes will serve as pallbearers. Memorial Contributions may be made to the Copper Creek Community Church or the American Cancer Society. Gate City Funeral Home is honored to be serving the Starnes family.
