"For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face; now I know in part, but then I shall know fully just as I have been fully known. But now abide faith, hope, love, these three; but the greatest of these is love." 1 Corinthians 13: 12 — 13

Charles C. Starnes – Gate City, VA
Charlie (Charles C. Starnes), 64, Gate City, VA entered peacefully into the presence of our Lord, at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center on Sunday, November 7, 2010, after a courageous four year battle with cancer.

Charlie never met a stranger and was loved by all who knew him. He was first and foremost a Christian, the most important part of his life. He accepted Christ and was buried with him in Holy Baptism on May 10, 1978. He was a member of Morrison City Christian Church and also loved the church of his youth, Marble Point Church. He was an avid fan of Gate City High School athletics, both boys and girls teams; a fan of the University of Tennessee football program and also of the Indianapolis Colts. He was also a huge fan of model railroads and all trains, big or small. His greatest love, other than for his Lord, was his family and friends.

He was a graduate of Gate City High School Class of 1964 and went to work at Eastman Chemical a month after his graduation. He retired from Eastman with over 35 years of service in the Tenite Division. He was also an honorary member of the GCHS class of 1966 and some of the happiest times of his life during the past four years were with that class at their monthly dinners and porch parties. He and his wife, Sharon, ran Starnes Photography where they were honored to help couples in over 400 weddings in a time span of over 25 years.

Charlie was preceded in passing by his parents, Claude (Todd) Starnes in 1982 and Faye Darnell Starnes in 1991; his parents-in-law, Ray E. and Ella Sue Lane Hodges, both in 2006 and by many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

He is survived by his adored wife of over 45 years, Sharon Hodges Starnes; his cherished son, Christopher Todd Starnes; his sister and brother-in-law, Lynn Starnes Church and Audley, of Gate City; his sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Diana Hodges Rogers and Norman (Buck), of Gray, TN; his niece, Debbie Church Skelton (Vim) of Church Hill, TN, his nephew, Phillip Ray Rogers (Jill) of Gray, TN, and a very special and beloved aunt, Ann Darnell Gordon of Gate City. He is also survived by his much loved and best little buddy of 10 years, his great-nephew, Brady Ray Rogers of Gray, TN. Also surviving is his dearest friend for 30 years, C.H. Presley, Jr. and dear friends from high school, Duane and Gene Shoemaker, all of whom he loved as family. He is also survived by many cousins and many, many friends.

A Christian Celebration of Charlie's life will be held on Wednesday, November 10, 2010, in the Gene Falin Chapel of the Gate City Funeral Home at 8:00 pm with Pastor Bob Underwood officiating and assisted by Brother Jay Bowen. The eulogy will be given by Dr. Wesley Eastridge. The family request you honor their wishes as there will be no home visitation. Visitation will be at the Funeral Home from 5:00 pm until 8:00 pm.

A private graveside service will be held on Thursday, November 11, 2010 at the Starnes Cemetery on Daniel Boone Road in Gate City.

Pallbearers will be Michael Brickey, Robbie Perry, Mark McArthur, David Reed, Jim Edwards, Harold Willis, Hugh Godsey, and Jeff Hamilton. Honorary Pallbearers will be Chuck Newton and Dr. Franklin Ellis.

The family wishes to thank the following for their love and wonderful care of Charlie: Dr. Wesley Eastridge and staff; Dr. Daryl Pierce and staff; Dr. Jeffrey Wallace and staff; Dr. George Gonzales and staff; Dr. Byron May and staff; the staff at Spectrum Laboratories – Meadowview; the nurses and staff of the oncology ward at Wellmont Holston Valley Hospital, including Renea, hospice coordinator; and the people he called Charlie's Angels, the nurses at Kingsport Hematology. A very, very special thanks to our friend Duane for her love, support, and constant presence during the last days of his life. You made a very difficult time more tolerable and we will be forever grateful.

The family requests in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Morrison City Church, 1940 Darnell Drive, Kingsport, TN 37660; Marble Point Church, 1303 Daniel Boone Road, Gate City, VA 24251; or the American Cancer Society, 508 Princeton Road #102, Johnson City, TN 37601.
