Rachel Dalton Stapleton passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, June 8, 2014 at her home in Kingsport.
Rachel grew up in Cliff Mountain (Scott County), VA, the daughter of the late George and Lucy (Fields) Dalton. She married James E. “Babe” Stapleton and together they spent over 51 years together before Babe’s passing in 1995. Their son, James Clyde, died at the age of 4 months. After the passing of her husband, Rachel moved to Kingsport.
In addition to her husband and son, her sisters, Kate Perry, Amanda Ketron, Rose Deathridge, Bertie Gilreath, Della Fields, and Marjorie Dalton; her brothers, Charles, Dan, Garland, George, Willie, and Guy Dalton; and brother-in-law, Cecil Stapleton preceded her in death.
Survivors include her daughters, Genia (Carl) Miller, Blackwater, VA and Shirley (Paul) Sullivan, Kingsport, granddaughter, Louisa (Ronald) Hill, Blackwater, VA; her great grandsons, Jonathan and Josh Hill, Blackwater, VA; sisters-in-law, Ruth (Arvel) Lewis, Gate City, VA and Shirley Stapleton, Weber City, VA; and all the members of her crochet family, The Joyful Stitchers; and a very special friend, Tori.
Rachel was an excellent seamstress and worked at Pins and Needles in Blackwater, VA for over 9 years. She worked in the grocery business for over 15 years with her and Babe owning their own business for over 10 years. Following her retirement she used her sewing and crocheting talents as a volunteer for several hospitals and organizations.
Rachel loved her flowers and took great pride in their beauty.
Rachel was a great mom and couldn’t do enough for her family. She loved her friends, who were just like extended family to her.
She was a member of Pleasant View Baptist Church and loved her church family dearly.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Wednesday, June 11, 2014 at the Gate City Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, June 12, 2014 in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Evangelist Kenneth Neeley, Brother Randall Stapleton, and Pastor Wayne Baker officiating. Ronald Hill and Alvin Goins will provide the music.
Burial will follow the services at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, VA. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Carl Stapleton and Mitch Thompson will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Memorial contributions may be made to Pleasant View Baptist Church, 2101 Stadium Drive, Kingsport, TN; The Joyful Stitchers, c/o Pleasant View Baptist Church; or a charity of one’s choice.
Then family would like to express their sincere gratitude to Amedisys Home Health and Hospice and to Dr. David Franzus and staff for the care they provided during Rachel’s illness.
