Herman R. Spriggs, Jr. – Gate City, VA
Herman Randolph Spriggs, Jr. (73) – Gate City, VA passed away, Monday, June 1, 2015 at Scott & White Hospital in Temple, Texas.
Herman was born on July 3, 1941 in Washington, DC but lived most of his life in Gate City, VA. He was a long time member of The Church of Christ. He was employed at Kingsport Press and retired after more than 30 years of service.
Herman was a very warm hearted person who was always willing to help those in need. He especially loved cooking and cherished the time he spent with his grandchildren, cousins, and friends. Herman also had a special aunt, Elizabeth Simpson, whom he loved dearly and visited daily until his health began to fail.
Herman was preceded in death by his loving wife of more than 30 years, Fannie Lyn Spriggs, one sister, Patty Gaines; a special granddaughter, Tiara Johnson; and his parents, Herman R. Spriggs, Sr. and Laura Gaines.
He is survived by his children, Jerome Spriggs and wife, Joy of Spartanburg, SC; Sherrita Spriggs of Kingsport, TN; Herman R. Spriggs, III and wife, Tanya of Harker Heights, TX; Dion Spriggs of Washington, DC; Antonio “Tony” Johnson of Kingsport, TN, and Tanisha Spriggs of Fredrick, MD; stepdaughters, Kim Owens of Sanford, NC and Stephanie Torres of Terre Haute, IN; 23 grandchildren; 3 great grandchildren; sisters, Heronia “Tiny” Hayes of Los Angeles, CA; GeeLinda Crossfield and husband, Orville of Los Angeles, CA; brother, Clifford Benton III of Los Angeles, CA; aunt Elizabeth Simpson and husband, Oscar of Gate City, VA; a loving family member Rhetta Spriggs of Kingsport, TN; sister-in-law, Mary Gamble and husband, William of Kingsport, TN; several nieces, nephews, and a host of cousins.
The family will receive friends from 1-3 p.m., Tuesday, June 9, 2015 at the Gate City Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 3:00 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Pastor Mark Harbison, Leland Williamson, Don Watts, and Pastor Nolan Wolfe officiating. Janice Sharp will provide the music.
Burial will follow at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, VA. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
