Barbara Carter Spears, 67, Church Hill, TN went to be with her Lord, Thursday, March 22, 2012 at her residence.

Born in Sullivan County, TN on December 5, 1944, she was the daughter of the late Leonard Carter and Nell Venable Carter. Barbara was saved at an early age and was a member of Homeland Baptist Church.
Barbara was employed by the Kingsport Press for 29 years. After retirement, she worked as a food nutritionalist at Mount Carmel Senior Citizens Center.

She was very organized and a great planner. She could schedule and oversee any event with ease. She loved her church and was active in visitation, food ministry and the AWANAS program. She and Gary regularly visited the Holston Valley Radiation Center taking snacks donated by the church members. They were also actively involved in their community serving others through "meals on wheels". She was a wonderful friend to all who knew her.

Barbara loved the Lord, and His light shone through her. Her desire was that others would come to accept Him as their Lord and Savior.

In addition to her parents, her grandparents Walter and Effie Venable and Aunt Virginia Venable Odom and husband, T.J. preceded her in death.

She is survived by her husband and "the love of her life" as she often said, Gary Spears, Church Hill, TN; daughters, Kim Smith and husband, Sam, Kingsport, TN, Cindy Christian and husband, Mike, Annapolis, MD, and Yvette Spears, Atlanta, GA; grandchildren, Samantha and Tanner Smith and Madison and Caroline Christian; brother, Walt Carter, Gate City, VA; nephew, Steve Carter and wife, Debbie, Georgetown, KY; and friend, Jayne Wolfe, Gate City, VA; special friends, John and Judy Dixon, Jim and Nelda Culbertson, and Kathleen Smith Heck; along with a host of friends, neighbors, and church family.
The family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m., Saturday, March 24, 2012 at the Gate City Funeral Home and other times at the residence. Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Pastor J.W. Depew and the Rev. Wrightly Salling officiating. Music will be provided by Damon Depew and Linda Vaughn.

Graveside services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, March 25, 2012 at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, VA. Grady Vaughn, Richard Venable, Jerry Venable, Ronnie Venable, Jack McMurray, Jack Wallen, Jim Culbertson, Alan Cumbow, Ellis Russell, and Jerry Smith will serve as pallbearers. Don Depew, David Ward, Raymond "Windy" Heck, Jan Nichols, and James "Cotton Hensley will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home at 1:15 p.m., Sunday to go in procession to the graveside service.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Property Fund, Homeland Baptist Church, 2504 Hawaii Street, Kingsport, TN 37660.

The family wishes to express their special thanks to Dr. Delwadia and staff; Dr. Shipstone and staff; along with the staff at Holston Valley Radiation and Oncology, and the staff of Wellmont Hospice for their kindness and care.
