Jack Smythe
Gate City, VA — Jack D. Smythe, 84, entered into rest Monday, July 6, 2009 at his residence.
He was born in Scott County, VA January 30, 1925 to the late Conley Barker Smythe and Lona Herron Smythe.
Including his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Hagen and Carl Smythe.
Mr. Smythe served in the United States Navy during World War II aboard the USS Sanders #40 destroyer escort. He has been retired from the Kingsport Press for 22 years. He was an avid fly fisherman and hunter who enjoyed sharing the outdoors with his family.
Survivors include his wife, Thelma Snodgrass Smythe, Gate City, VA; two daughters and sons-in-law, Kathy and Greg Baumgarner, Marion, VA, Lynn and Howell Chapman, Gate City, VA; brother, Nat Smythe, Gate City, VA; three grandchildren, Amanda Chapman, Brandon Chapman, and Alan Baumgarner; several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, July 8, 2009 at Gate City Funeral Home. Services will be at 8 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Brother Mark Estep officiating and eulogy will be given by Delaney Herron, Jr.
Military graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 9, 2009 at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, VA conducted by American Legion Hammond Post #3 and Gate City Post #265. The family will meet at 10:15 a.m. at the funeral home to go in procession to the cemetery.
Family serving as pallbearers will be Howell Chapman, Greg Baumgarner, Brandon Chapman, Alan Baumgarner, Allen Smythe, Danny Roller and Louie Smythe.
