Jimmy Sloan – Gate City, VA
Mr. James Henry "Jimmy" Sloan, 75, Gate City, VA passed away Wednesday, April 18, 2012 at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.
Mr. Sloan was born in Scott County, VA on February 17, 1937 to the late John Douglas and Lovely Mae Hensley Sloan. He was a veteran of the United States Army from 1954 to 1956. He was a retired machine operator for Grief Bros. Co.
In addition to his parents, his mother-in-law, Geneva Falin Johnson; father-in-law, Elmer Johnson; sister-in-law, Inez Carter; and brothers-in-law, Billy Williams and Frank Hood preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, LaRue Johnson Sloan; daughters, Annette Sloan Parker of Weber City, VA and Anita Sloan of Gray, TN; twin sisters, Geree Hood Hilliard and husband Walt of Kingsport, TN and Geneve Williams of Kingsport, TN; brother, John Douglas "J.D" Sloan Jr. and wife Sandy of NC; grandchildren, Marcus Smith and fiancé Tabitha Dockery of Duffield, VA and Emily Parker of Weber City, VA; special brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Norman and Bobbie Bishop; along with several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m., Saturday, April 21, 2012 at the Gate City Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Carl Gibson officiating. Natural Tunnel Church Singers will provide the music.
Military graveside services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., Sunday, April 22, 2012 at the Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, VA, conducted by American Legion Hammond Post #3 of Kingsport, TN and Post #265 of Gate City, VA, assisted by members of the Virginia Army National Guard Honor Guard. Marcus Smith, Larry Max Wilson, Dennis Parker, Gary Walters, Jimmy Calhoun, Ricky Calhoun, Teddy Parker, and Walt Hilliard will serve as pallbearers. Norman Bishop, Shannon Bishop, David Frank, Audie Rhoton, J.R. Gibson, and Roy Baker will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Family and friends are asked to meet at 12:15 p.m. at the funeral home to go in procession to the cemetery.
The family would like to extend special appreciation to Shannon and Shawne Bishop for their love and care of Mr. Sloan.
