Edward E. "Pop Pop" Shipley, Jr., 83, passed away peacefully at home November 24, 2009. He went on to his heavenly home after an extended illness.

Edward was born September 21, 1926 in Jersaleum, MD, Baltimore Co. He was a resident of Scott County, VA since January 1982.

He retired from Operating Engineers Local 37 as crane operator/oiler, enjoyed auto painting and repairing.

Edward served in the Army/Air Force during WWII.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Myrtle Ritz Shipley and an infant brother.

Surviving are his wife of 47 years, Joy Benton Shipley, Weber City, VA; six children, Eddie (Tina) Shipley, Gate City, VA, Angela (Tony) Bellamy, Yuma, VA, Brooks (Ann) Shipley, Kingsport, TN, Richard (Debbie) Shipley, Pylesville, MD, Diane (Steve) Suk, Lebanon, PA, Bobby (Kathy) Shipley, Kings Mountain, NC; 12 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren; 1 great-great grandson; three brothers, Tommy, Carl and Howard Shipley; special friends, Fred and Lois Dockery, Danny Laney, Jimmy Summey and Joe Taylor.

The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday, November 27, 2009 at Gate City Funeral Home. Services will be at 8 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Ken Pierce and Rev. Layton Bentley officiating. Music will be provided by his granddaughter, Crystal Shipley and Brenda Bentley. Eulogy will be given by Brooks Shipley.

Military graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, November 28, 2009 at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, VA conducted by the American Legion Hammond Post #3 and Gate City Post #265.

The family will meet at 9 a.m. at the funeral home to go in procession to the cemetery.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Mt. Pleasant Cemetery Fund, which he maintained for several years, c/o Midway Memorial United Methodist Church, 5532 Veterans Memorial Hwy., Gate City, VA 24251.
