Jesse Ray Sergent, 56, Dungannon, VA went to be with the Lord, Thursday, March 7, 2013 at MCV/VCU Transplant Hospital, Richmond, VA.
Jesse was born in Sandusky, Ohio on December 30, 1956 to the late Estelle Sluss Richmond and Howard Sergent, and was a lifelong resident of Dungannon, VA. He made his home with his grandparents, Ballard and Lois Sluss in Dungannon. He was an avid hunter and fisherman who loved the outdoors and his dog, Bengy.
He was a 1977 graduate of Twin Springs High School and was employed by Mini Fibers, Johnson City, TN for 31 years. He loved his job and the people who worked there who were like family to him.
He was a Christian and a faithful member of Valley View Church where he sang in the choir. He loved his family, they were his life.
In addition to his parents, his uncle, Ben Sluss and aunt Margaret Lou Meade preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife of 26 years, Carolyn (Sue) Darnell Sergent, Dungannon, VA; son, Jesse James and wife, Victoria Sergent , West Carters Valley, TN; twin brother, Jimmy (Sarge) Sergent, Dungannon, VA; brothers, John Sergent, Sandusky, OH, Jerry Richmond and wife, Elsie, Sandusky, OH; sisters, Jackie Eckhardt and husband, John, Sandusky, OH; nephews, Johnny Ray and Jarrett Eckhardt, Sandusky, OH, Justin Richmond, Sandusky, OH; uncles, Charles Sluss, Nickelsville, VA, Mack Sluss and wife, Mary, Nickelsville, VA; Hershel Sluss, Castlewood, VA, and Donnie Sluss and wife, Lizzy, Dungannon, VA; aunts, Brenda Jesse and friend, Jerry Strong, Dungannon, VA, Frieda Sluss, Dungannon, VA, Jenny Campbell, Nickelsville, VA; sisters-in-law, Kathy Corder and husband, Kyle "Toot" Corder, Dungannon, VA (who was his best friend), Zella Taylor and husband, Charles, Bristol, VA, Velma Starnes and husband, Rev. Fred Starnes, Rye Cove, VA; brothers-in-law, Howard Darnell and wife, Lorraine, Dungannon, VA, Delmar Darnell and wife, Wanda, Dungannon, VA; very special niece, Angela Corder, who was like a daughter; very close special friend, Velena Wheatley; a host of cousins, many nephews and nieces, and lots of friends.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m., Sunday, March 10, 2013 at the Gate City Funeral Home and other times at the residence of Kyle (Toot) and Kathy Corder. Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Pastor L.W. "Red" Salling, Rev. Johnny Clark, and Dr. Todd Cassel officiating. Blood Bought Singers will provide the music.
Graveside services will be conducted at 12:00 p.m., Monday, March 11, 2013 at the Ben Sluss Memorial Cemetery on Twin Springs Road, Dungannon, VA. Edward Sluss, Jason Sluss, Greg Robinson, Jerry Strong, Jerry Darnell, and Mack Quillen will serve as pallbearers. Employees of Mini Fibers, Inc., George Hensley, J.M. Dorton, Grover Dooley, Charles Floyd Osborne, and Mike Corder will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Family and friends are asked to meet at the cemetery for the graveside service.
