Margaret Beasley Scott
Margaret Beasley Scott passed away quietly in her sleep on Sunday at her residence at Preston Place Suites surrounded by her family and dedicated caregivers. The daughter of Ray S. and Lucille Draper Beasley, Margaret Ellen was born June 20, 1929 in Pocahontas, Virginia.
Her family moved to Big Stone Gap while she was still very young and Margaret Ellen attended school there, graduating from Big Stone Gap High School. After high school she attended Longwood College in Farmville, Virginia earning a degree in Mathematics. Upon graduation she elected to follow in the footsteps of her mother, grandmother and aunt by accepting a job teaching. Her first job was as a math teacher at Marion High School where she met and married Ben Scott, her devoted husband of 59 years. She taught at Christiansburg High School while her husband finished his college degree. Upon his graduation they moved to Waynesboro, Virginia.
There they raised three sons and Margaret returned to teaching after the boys were established in their schooling. She taught math at Kate Collins Junior High School from 1967 till 1976 when they moved to Weber City, Virginia. In the fall of 1977 she began teaching math in several different programs at Dobyns Bennett High School in Kingsport, TN. She taught there until her retirement in 1994. Margaret was a member of the international honorary teachers sorority, Alpha Delta Kappa, and upon her retirement was active in the Kingsport Retired Teachers Association.
Margaret was a life-long Methodist and was an active member of her congregation, Holston View UMC, until her health prevented her participation in many church activities. She was a former Board Member at Health South in Kingsport and participated in many organ transplant related support activities.
In addition to her parents, her husband, Benjamin Bruce Scott preceded her in death in 2010.
She is survived by her sons, Zane Scott and wife, Rebecca, Gate City VA, Hugh Scott and wife, Cindy, Cummings GA, and Carl Scott and wife, Marleta, Bright IN; grandchildren, Arthur, Drew, Sarah, and Andrew Scott, David Scott and wife Christine, and Jana Huff and husband Eric; and great grandchild Benjamin Scott; brother, David Beasley and wife, Lucille (Lou), Hampton, VA; along with several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, January 6, 2015 at Holston View United Methodist Church, Weber City VA. Funeral services will be held at 7:00 p.m. in the chapel with the Reverend Don Hanshew officiating.
Graveside services will take place at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, January 7, 2015 at Mount Carmel Cemetery in Marion, VA. Her grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.
