Benjamin Bruce Scott, 78, Weber City, VA passed away Wednesday, April 7, 2010 at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.
Mr. Scott was born in Smyth County, VA on April 25, 1931, a son of the late Charles Wassum and Caroline Snider Scott. He was a veteran of the United States Army and was retired as an environmental engineer with Sterling Casket Hardware Company.
A 1957 graduate of Virginia Tech, Ben lived in Waynesboro, VA from 1957 to 1975, where he served as a City Councilman and Mayor. He was a member of Lee Lodge No.209 and Catlett Lodge No.35. Ben was an active member of Holston View United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir. He was a vocal advocate of organ donation.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Nathan Scott, Andy Scott, and John Scott; and brother-in-law, Robert Carnahan.
Surviving Mr. Scott are his wife, Margaret Scott, Weber City, VA; sons and daughters-in-law, Zane and Rebecca Scott, Gate City, VA, Hugh and Cindy Scott, South Riding, VA, and Carl and Marleta Scott, Bright, IN; grandchildren, Arthur, Drew, David, Jana, Sarah, and Andrew Scott; sister, Sallie Carnahan, Roanoke, VA; brothers, Jake and Madeline Scott, Marion, VA, and Charlie and Joyce Scott, San Mateo, FL; sister-in-law, Betty Scott, Radford, VA; several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m., Friday, April 9, 2010 at the Holston View United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. with the Rev. Jack Weikel, the Rev. Ken Pierce, and the Rev. Bob Copeland officiating. James Wood will provide the music. Joe Marine, Bob Kilgore, Larry Keith, Dr. James Hal Smith, Bill Demastus, Bill Draper, and Lou Trott will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 10, 2010 at the Mount Carmel Cemetery, Marion, VA with the Rev. Mark A. Scott officiating. Grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.
