Rufus Russell, 90, Duffield, VA passed away, Friday, September 23, 2011 at his residence with his family by his side.
Mr. Russell was born in Scott County, VA on October 12, 1920, the son of the William Clark and Haley Brunner Russell.
He was a veteran of the United States Navy and retired from Eastman Kodak.
His wife, Helen Darnell Russell; sister, Myrtle Russell; and brothers, Douglas, Burley, Worley, Bob, D.A., and Kinard Russell preceded him in death.
Surviving are his daughter, Linda Russell Qualls, Duffield, VA; sons, Rufus Kent Russell and wife, Helen, Duffield, VA and William DeShea Russell and fiancee, Angela, Duffield, VA; special friend, Venus Carrier, Kingsport, TN; grandchildren, Tony Martin Qualls, Freda R. Starnes, Hannah Grace Russell, and Jessica and Grace White; great grandchildren, Tabatha Byrd, Justin Qualls, Rusty Qualls, and Tyler Starnes; 4 great great grandchildren; along with several nieces and nephews and many friends.
The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m., Monday, September 26, 2011 at the Gate City Funeral Home and other times at his residence. Funeral services will be conducted at 8:00 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Charles Rhoton and Rev. Jonathan Lovelace officiating.
Military graveside services will be conducted by the American Legion Hammond Post #3 of Kingsport, TN and Post #265 of Gate City, VA, assisted by the Virginia Army National Guard Honor Guard at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at the Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, VA. Grandsons and Great Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home at 10:15 a.m., Tuesday day to go in procession to the graveside service.
