Clyde Willie “Peanut” Rose, 88 years old, joined his Lord and Savior on Monday, July 22, 2019. Peanut was born in Pardee Hollow, Virginia on May 7, 1931 to Martha Jane Rhoton Rose and Hiram Patton Rose.
Clyde was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers (Walter, Ben and John) and three sisters (Savanna, Jeanette and Geneva). Clyde was also preceded in death by his son Randy.
Clyde is survived by two sisters, Viola Rose Baxter of Kingsport, TN and Millie Rose Stephen of Louisiana. Peanut is also survived by four children all of Kingsport: Clyde, Judy, Brenda and Chuck. Several grandchildren, nieces, nephews and close friends will miss him. Perhaps, Peanuts most devoted companions during his final years were Brownie and Daisy, his beloved little dogs, who were by his side until the end.
Peanut was retired from The Mead after a proud 41 and “a half” years of service. Everyone who knew Peanut either from work, church or the community was amazed by his impressive ability to recall dates of importance to him. The Duffield and Purchase Ridge area of Scott County will lay to rest more local history than can be imagined with Clyde W “Peanut” Rose.
Often Peanut was asked how he had gotten that nickname. With a sparkle in his beautiful blue eyes he recounted his story: “Well on May 7, 1931 a little baby boy was born in a coal camp in Pardee, VA. He only weighed 2 and a half pounds. The first time his father looked at him he said, ‘Why, he’s not any bigger than a big ‘ole peanut.’ That little baby boy was me and I’ve been called Peanut from then on.”
Peanut, we’ve enjoyed your stories and been mesmerized by your memory. Until we meet again on Heaven’s Shore, we will hold you in our hearts and our memories.
