Richard Howard Sloan – Gate City, VA

Richard Howard Sloan, 85, went to be with Jesus, May 8, 2023, at his residence in Gate City, VA, after a long period of declining health.

He was born May 31, 1937, to Rev. Mitchell and Alice (Rhoton) Sloan. He is preceded in death by his brothers, Burley, and Glen; sisters, Opal McLain, Virginia Clendenin, Mary Wells; and one great-grandson, Holden Howard Randolph.

Howard served in the Army for two years while stationed in Germany. He was saved at Sloantown Community Church where he served as a deacon for several years.

Howard was a loving husband, father, and papaw. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 63 years, Evelyn Pierson Sloan; sons, Randell (Vicky) Sloan, Richard (Patsy) Sloan; 5 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; sisters, Wilma Jones, Shirley (John) Shelton, Juanita (Frank) Gilliam; brother, Olen Sloan; special friend, Phil Edens; and several nieces, nephews, and a host of lifelong friends.  

The family will receive friends from 5-7p.m., Friday, May 12, 2023, at the Gate City Funeral Home.

Military Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00a.m., Saturday, May 13, 2023, at the Sloantown Cemetery, by the American Legion Hammond post #3, Kingsport, TN, and Post #265, Gate City, VA, Virginia National Guard Honors Team. Pastor Kevin Vincent, Rev. Jackie Frazier, and Pastor Terry Puckett will provide a eulogy. Kenneth Davis will provide the music.

Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home at 10:00a.m., to go in procession to the graveside service. Grandsons and great-grandsons will serve as pallbearers. Great-granddaughters, Kaylyn, and Allyson will serve as honorary pallbearers.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made in Howard’s honor to Sloantown Community Church, 202 Halo Dr., Clinchport, VA, 24244.
