Rev. Herman Carson Quillin, Sr., age 94, passed away March 1, 2010 at his residence.
Rev. Quillin was born May 6, 1915 in Scott County, Virginia, Alley Valley Community, where he has lived his entire life.
He was the son of the late Everson V. and Mozella McConnell Quillin.
He attended public schools in Scott County, and entered the ministry at a very young age of 17. He completed studies at the School of Ministerial Studies, a non-denominal school in Kent, OH, the American Bible Institute, and received his Doctor of Divinity Degree from the Christian Theological College, Inc. in New York. He was a member of American Evangelical Christian Churches, whose headquarters are based in Indianapolis, IN.
In 1968, seeking fellowship and Christian understanding, and wishing to promote the philosophy of "No Book But The Bible, No Creed But Christ, No Law But Love, No Name But Christian", he was founder of the Christian Brotherhood, Inc. He was editor of the "Christian Brotherhood" publication until 2008. In his 70 plus years in the ministry, he pastured and evangelized in numerous states including VA, KY, WVA, TN, OH and AR. He was pastor and Bible Teacher at Lawson Memorial Church for 30 years, leaving there in 2007 due to his declining health.
During his ministry, he officiated at 2,239 weddings.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his late wife, Glennia Margaret Spears Quillin, the mother of his children; one infant son; a brother, Paul Lee Quillin; a grandson, Mark Stephen Quillin; daughter-in-law, Jean Quillin; son-in-law, Robert Kelly Nelson.
He was also preceded in death by his late wife, Helen Gillenwater Quillin.
His survivors include daughter, Emma Rena Penrod and David, Bowling Green, KY; sons, Cowell Quillin and Bobbie, Kingsport, TN, Dwight E. Quillin and Jennifer, Kingsport, TN, Michael Carr Quillin and Rhonda, Kingsport, TN, Hobart Larry Quillin and Linda, Greenwood, IN, Herman C. Quillin, Jr. and Gracie, Dallastown, PA, Billy Joe Quillin and Gwen, Ft. Blackmore, VA; daughter-in-law, Charlotte Quillin, Baltimore, MD; twelve grandchildren, Robbin Nelson Wells and Jerry, Bowling Green, KY, David Quillin and Mitzi, Kingsport, TN, Jeff Quillin and Donna, Kingsport, TN, Stephanie Nelson and Bill, Baltimore, MD, Sheri Quillin, Johnson City, TN, Richard Quillin and Ginger, Ft. Blackmore, VA, Sarah Quillin and Seth Quillin, Greenwood, IN, Rachel Quillin and Kristi Quillin, Johnson City, TN, Michael Brandon Quillin, Elizabeth City, NC, Jason Carrico, Nickelsville, VA, and Leslie Hall, Powell, TN; Seventeen great grandchildren, Andrew Sharp and Heather, Bowling Green, KY, Jacob, Heath, Caylin, Chayla Quillin, Kingsport, TN, Brittany Stewart and Tenley Stewart, Baltimore, MD, Ethan and Alex Quillin, Ft. Blackmore, VA, Malachi, Jaydyn, Myah Carrico, Nickelsville, VA, Landon Bailey, Kayla Bailey, Kingsport, TN, Madison Hall, Powell, TN, Adrienne Duncan and Auston Steffey, Kingsport, TN; a special 5th generation great great granddaughter, Adrianna Kelly Sharp, Bowling Green, KY; two step daughters, Donna Brickey and Steve, Ft. Blackmore, VA and Aretta Hill and Larry, Mt. Carmel, TN; one step son, Don Gillenwater and Debbie, Ft. Blackmore, VA; five step grandchildren and nine step great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, March 3, 2010 at Gate City Funeral Home. Services will be conducted at 8 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Wrightly Salling and Rev. David Penrod officiating. Eulogies will be given by Wanda Addington and Rex McCarty. Music will be provided by Don Brooks Trio.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 4, 2010 at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, VA.
The family will meet at 9:15 a.m. at the funeral home to go in procession to the cemetery.
Pallbearers will be grandsons, David Quillin, Jeff Quillin, Richard Quillin, Jason Carrico, Seth Quillin and Michael Brandon Quillin.
