Phyllis Hensley Smith

Phyllis Hensley Smith of Gate City, VA died peacefully surrounded by family on Thursday, April 13th, 2023.

Born in Kingsport, TN, Phyllis was preceded in death by her loving husband of 52 years, Elliott Smith in January of 2020.  She was the daughter of the late Bates and Jeanette Hensley. 

A loving wife, mother, sister and friend, Phyllis lived a life of generosity and selflessness.  Her favorite activity was spending any time she could with her family.   Phyllis was a loyal supporter of St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital and was even more generous with her time in helping others when they needed her.  She retired from Scott County Social Services where she was a supervisor for many years.

Phyllis is survived by daughter, Heather Smith; son, Kevin Smith and wife, Kristen; sister, Patsy Hensley Porter; brother, Danny Hensely and wife, Kathy; sister-in-law, Vicki Smith; brother-in-law Grady Winegar; along with several loving nieces, nephews, and many close friends. 

The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m., Wednesday, April 19th, 2023, at the Gate City Funeral Home.  

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital (Make a donation to cure childhood cancer - St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (stjude.org) or the Rheumatoid Arthritis Foundation (Make a Donation - Rheumatoid Arthritis Foundation (helpfightra.org)).
