Shirley M. Palmer – Johnson City, TN
Shirley M. Palmer, 79, beloved wife of Thomas D. Palmer for 62 years, passed away peacefully on February 7, 2016 surrounded by members of her family.
She was born in Scott County, Virginia to Rhea and Matilda Robinette McConnell. Shirley graduated from ETSU in 1957 as the first graduate of the B.S. Degree Nursing program and worked over 30 years in obstetrics. As a member of First United Methodist Church, she was active in the Friendship Sunday School Class. She was a member of the Daughters of American Revolution.
Shirley was a devoted Christian, involved in missions both foreign and locally. She felt a deep calling to help others in times of need through meals, visitation and spiritual support. Her sweet spirit, genuine faith and servant’s heart touched many lives. Shirley, along with her husband, established the Tom and Shirley Palmer Foundation to support Christian missions. She had a deep love of family, not only her immediate but also her extended family and close friends. One of her favorite ways to show her love was to cook and host family dinners and wonderful get-togethers. She was known for her great cooking. A lover of nature, she was active in both vegetable and flower gardening. Shirley also enjoyed traveling; she visited all 50 states as well as 39 countries.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by daughters Patti Jacobs and husband Guy, Jeanne Clarke and husband Ralph; two granddaughters, Shannon Jacobs and Linsey Clarke; three grandsons, Andrew and Austin Clarke, Bradley Clarke and wife Jane and great grandson Christopher. One sister, Christine Barker and husband Wayne; one brother, Walton McConnell and wife Ada as well as many close cousins, nieces and nephews.
Family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., Thursday, February 11, 2016 at the Gate City Funeral Home A celebration of Shirley’s life will be held at 1:00p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Jim Pollock and Evangelist Kenneth Neeley officiating.
Burial will be in Monte Vista Memorial Gardens, Johnson City following the service. Ralph Clarke, Guy Jacobs, Steve Tipton, Keith Kelly, Forrest McCue and Jim Heaton will serve as pallbearers. Members of Friendship Sunday School Class will serve as honorary pallbearers.
