James J. Owens – Gate City, VA
James Junior Owens, 87, of Gate City, VA, passed away Tuesday, June 10, 2014 at his residence.
Mr. Owens was born in Wise County, VA on March 3, 1927 to the late Andy and Ellie Tipton Owens. James served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and worked for the Scott County School system.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his first wife Mildred Davis Owens, second wife Helen Tipton Owens, sister, Elvie Davis, brothers, Hubert V. Owens, Chester Owens and Guy Owens and a special granddaughter, Natosha Gibson.
He is survived by his daughters; Mary Williams and husband Larry of Gate City, VA, Louise Janutolo and husband Eldo of Ft. Myers, FL, sons; Larry Owens and wife Virginia of Tazwell, VA, Mike Owens and wife Jerlene of Gate City, VA, Henry Smith and wife Betty of Gate City, VA, and Roger Smith and wife Brenda of Tazwell, VA, 13 grandchildren, several great grandchildren, several great great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and good neighbors and friends Jack and Sandra Hammond.
The Owens family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Thursday, June 12, 2014 at Gate City Funeral Home in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel and other times at the residence or the home of Mary Williams. Funeral Services will be held at 7:00 p.m. with Rev. Lennis France and Rev. Jimmy Combs officiating. Tipton Family Quartet will provide the music.
Graveside services for Mr. Owens will held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 13, 2014 at Tipton Family Cemetery in Manville Community. The grandchildren will serve as pallbearers.
Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home at 10:15 a.m., to go in procession to the graveside service.
