Though your smile is gone forever, and your hand I cannot touch, I still have so many memories, of the one I love so much. Your memory is a keepsake with which I'll never part; God has you in his keeping, I have you in my heart. Sadly missed, but never forgotten.
Emmitt Drexel "Dick" Odle passed away peacefully Saturday, June 11, 2011 with his loving family by his side at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.
Born January 21, 1929 to John W. and Emma H. Odle, he spent his entire life in Nickelsville where he was a farmer, and a friend to everyone he met. He was the manager of the Scott Farmers Co-op for 20 years.
He was a veteran of the United States Army where he served from 1948 to 1950.
He was a 60 year member of Fidelity Lodge #173, Nickelsville and Stewart Lodge #224 where he served as master of the lodge several times. He was a member of the Jericho Shrine Temple, a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Post #9864 of Lebanon, VA, a lifetime member of the Nickelsville Rescue Squad, a charter member of the Nickelsville Order of the Eastern Star #188, and a member of Nickelsville First Baptist Church where he serves as a Deacon and Sunday School Director.
In addition to his parents, John and Emma Odle, he was preceded in death by a brother, Jack W. Odle and sisters, Lou Richards and Faye Burleson.
He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Velma Odle, Nickelsville, VA; sons, Ricky Odle and wife, Connie, Gate City, VA and Johnny Odle and friend, Karen Powers, Nickelsville, VA; five grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; sister, Peggy Musick, Vivian, LA; and a brother, Don Odle and wife, Nancy, Nickelsville, VA; along with several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 4-8 p.m., Tuesday, June 14, 2011 at the Gate City Funeral Home. Masonic services will begin at 8:00 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home followed by funeral services with the Rev. Steve Collins and the Rev. George Odle officiating. A eulogy will be given by Thomas Hillman. The Gethsemane Quartet and David and Debbie Easterling will provide the music.
Military graveside services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, June 15, 2011 at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, VA conducted by members of the American Legion Post #3 of Kingsport, TN and Post #265 of Gate City, VA assisted by members of the Virginia Army National Guard Honor Guard. Matthew Odle, Adam Odle, Brad Fields, Landon Odle, Brandon Odle, Michael Odle, Shannon McNutt, and Allen Davis will serve as pallbearers. Members of Fidelity Lodge #173, Nickelsville and members of the Nickelsville Rescue Squad will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home at 12:15 p.m., Wednesday to go in procession to the graveside service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Hartsock Cemetery, c/o Velma Odle, 307 Arch Lane, Nickelsville, VA 24271.
