Charles William Nickels, Jr. 81 formerly of Gate City, VA passed away, Thursday, February 1, 2018 at Wexford House, Kingsport, TN after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Born in Scott County, VA, Charles graduated from Shoemaker High School and attended ETSU. After enlisting in the United States Air Force, he graduated from Washington State University and the Air Force Institute of Technology. Upon retiring from the Air Force after 21 years of service, throughout the United States and overseas, he worked for the Boeing Corporation.
He was a past member of the Gate City Civitans, an avid golfer, loved traveling, and was a talented handyman/craftsman that was always willing to help others.
Charles was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who was most happy when spending time with his family and friends. He was beloved by all that knew him.
He was preceded in death by his father, Charles; mother, Lillie; sisters, Frances, Joan, and Ruth.
He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Jane; daughter, Debra and husband, Ben; son, Charles and wife, Tressa; grandchildren, Sara, Billy, and David; brother-in-law, Bob Lewis; along with several nieces and nephews.
A private Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
