Shannon Dane Newton, 38, Gate City, VA passed away Friday, May 18, 2012 at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center, Kingsport, TN.
Dane was born in Sullivan County, TN on April 29, 1974 to Kemper Charles "Chuck" and Arletha Barbour Newton. He was a veteran of the United States Army, was of the Baptist faith and a member of the First Baptist Church of Gate City, VA.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, John and Alice Barbour; paternal grandparents, Claude Newton and Margaret Jane Newton Balthis; and aunts, Judy Wells, Betty Wellmaker, and Elizabeth Barbour.
He is survived by his wife, Danita Byrd Newton, Gate City, VA; parents, Kemper C. "Chuck" Newton and Arletha Barbour Newton, Gate City, VA; sister, Theresa Newton, Gate City, VA; brother, LCDR Don Newton USN Ret and wife, Captain MaryBeth Newton, USN Ret., Bonita , CA; nephews, Zeke Newton, Jeron Waye, and Lucas Roney; niece, Zoey Waye; and his much loved aunt, Joan Wilder, along with many family and friends.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m., Monday, May 21, 2012 at the Gate City Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Jeff DeBoard and Rev. Andy Barnes officiating. Andrew Barnes and Marcus and Christie Smith will provide the music.
Military graveside services will be conducted by American Legion Hammond Post #3, Kingsport, TN and Post #265, Gate City, VA assisted by members of the Virginia Army National Guard Honor Guard at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 22, 2012 at Bellamy Cemetery, Waycross, VA. Darryl Roney, Danny Waye, Travis Barnette, Chris Gunn, Brian Carraway, and Stevie Hensley will serve as pallbearers. Stan Rogers, Scott Vermillion, Coach Nick Colobro, and Michael Buckles will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday to go in procession to the graveside service.
In lieu of flowers, the family request that donations be made to Gate City Funeral Home to help with the funeral expenses.
