Raymond Newton – Weber City, VA
Raymond Newton (SFC-U.S. Army Retired), 92, Weber City, VA passed away peacefully, with his wife by his side on Sunday, April 27, 2014, at NOVA Health and Rehab Center, Weber City, VA.
Raymond was born on December 24, 1921, to the late James Samuel Newton and Myrtle Smith Newton.
He was the oldest charter member of Community Fellowship Baptist Church in Gate City, VA.
Raymond, a veteran of the United States Army, served during World War II. He was a recipient of two Purple Hearts and a Bronze Star Medal. He landed on Utah Beach at Normandy and fought in the Battle of the Bulge. Following WWII, he joined the 82nd Airborne at Ft. Bragg, NC. He continued his career at Ft. Benning, GA and with the 101st Airborne Screaming Eagles at Ft. Campbell, KY until his retirement in 1964. With over one hundred jumps, he earned his Century Wings.
In addition to his parents, his infant daughter, Penelope Newton; sisters, Kathleen Newton Gothard and husband, Lee, Sr., Ella Sue Hackler and husband, Leo; brothers, Hubert Newton and wife, Hazel and Alfred Newton; and nephews, Lee Gothard, Jr. and Michael Hackler preceded him in death.
Surviving is his wife of 68 years, Nell Stokes Newton, of the home; daughters, Cynthia Haynes, Kingsport, TN and Pamela Osborne and husband, Howard, Kingsport, TN; son, Thomas Raymond Lowe and wife, Elvira, Belfast, Northern Ireland; grandchildren, John Thomas and wife, Miranda, Kingsport, TN, Rebecca Cox, Kingsport, TN, Amanda Schumpert and husband, Scott, Winston-Salem, NC, Victoria Lowe Myers and husband, Terry, and Catherine Lowe, Belfast, Northern Ireland; great grandchildren, Cameron, Seth, and Gavin Cox; Aja and Pierce Thomas, Aubrey and Ian Vincent, Gabe and Reese Thomas, Leah, Stephen and James Myers; brother, Roy Newton and wife, Ruth; maternal aunt, Elizabeth “Sis” Collins, along with several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, April 29, 2014 at the Gate City Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with M. A. Lunsford and Rev. Darrell Fletcher officiating. Judy McConnell and Francie Henard will provide the music.
Military graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, VA by Rev. Odell Beauchamp and the Gate City Army National Guard Honor Guard. Members of the Honor Guard will serve as pallbearers. Max Peters, M.A. Lunsford, Lynn Miller, Graham Thomas, Howard Osborne, Billy Lark, and John Thomas will serve as honorary pallbearers.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions can be made to the Community Fellowship Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 1407, Gate City, VA 24251.
The family wishes to express their heartfelt thanks to the employees of Nova Health and Rehab Center for the love and care that was given to Raymond.
