Jack Newland – Gate City, VA
Harry Jackson “Jack” Newland, 68, Gate City, VA passed away, Wednesday, February 11, 2015.
Jack was born in Sullivan County, TN on September 14, 1946, a son of Edith Gooden Newland and the late Harry Sandidge Newland.
He served in the military from 1968-1970 where he was stationed in Cu Chi Vietnam.
Jack was a graduate of East Tennessee State University with a degree in elementary education and was a teacher in the Scott County School System for over 30 years, first at Dungannon Elementary, and finally at Yuma Elementary, retiring November 1, 2000.
He began working for Browns Custom Shop immediately after high school graduation. He continued working there during summers throughout his teaching career, finally owning and operating his own floor covering business. Jack retired from his own business in 2013 due to the onset of Parkinson’s disease.
In 2009 Jack joined the Gate City United Methodist Church family, always sitting with Mary and Bucky Clabaugh. He attended regularly until his passing.
Jack’s interests were fully supporting all Gate City High School sports as well as Virginia Tech and ETSU sports. He was a charter member of the Big Blue Boosters Club.
He is survived by his mother, Edith Gooden Newland; sisters, Kathy Newland Simmons and husband, Ronnie and Helen Newland Henderson and fiance, Barry Oliver; brother, Allan Wayne Newland and wife, Carol; nephews, Bryan Henderson and wife, Penny, Mike Newland and wife, Donna, Chris Todd Henderson and wife, Susan, Tim Newland and wife, Stacy, and Kelly Williams; great nephews, Matt Henderson, Lucas Henderson, Nick Henderson, Chris Henderson, Grant Newland, Benjamin Henderson, and Cameron Henderson; great nieces, Jordann Henderson, Lauryn Williams, Dana Newland, and Camryn Newland; great-great nephew, Brody Elijah Henderson.
Jack Newland is also survived by extended family members including aunts, uncles, and cousins, and a host of former students and co workers, including his special Yuma Elementary buddy, Hope Cooper Bright and special lifelong friends, Susan Shelton Palmer, Cathy Foster Bolling, Steve Gilliam, and Tucker Barker.
Jack was blessed to have so many close friends, many of whom considered him to be their best friend, especially Elliott Smith and Don Frazier and others too numerous to mention by name.
The family will receive friends from 3-6 p.m., Sunday, February 15, 2015 at the Gate City United Methodist Church. The Celebration of Life Service will be conducted at 6:00 p.m. with Rev. Joe Barber and Rev. David Newland officiating. A eulogy will be given by Elliott Smith. Nick Henderson, Kelly Williams, and Chris Henderson will provide the music.
Military graveside services will be conducted at 12:00 Noon, Monday, February 16, 2015 at Walnut Chapel Church Cemetery, East Carter’s Valley by the Virginia Army National Guard Funeral Honors Team. Jack’s nephews will serve as pallbearers. Elliott Smith, Don Frazier, Bucky Clabaugh, Bobby Joe Davidson, Greg Carter, Roger Wolfe, Hagan Hartgrove, Darryl Johnson, Frank Castle, Byrd Blackburn, Nick Colobro, Dwight Lane, Jack Manis, and all of his friends at the golf course, Jack’s second home will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home at 11:15 a.m. Monday to go in procession to the graveside service.
