Roy R. Minton, 67, Nickelsville, VA passed away, Monday, November 5, 2012 at his residence.
Mr. Minton was born in Mingo County, WV on February 10, 1945 to the late Nathan Marvin and Thelma Rasnake Minton.
Roy was a graduate of Nickelsville High School and served 2 years in the United States Army attaining the rank of Sgt. He was an employee of the Kingsport Press for 43 years. He attended Nickelsville United Methodist Church and had been a member of the Nickelsville Ruritan Club since 1999.
He especially enjoyed working at the Bush Mill during their Fall Festival and delivering meals to the elderly in the community at Christmas.
In addition to his parents, 5 five brothers; 6 sisters; father-in-law, Fred Wheatley, Sr.; brothers-in-law, David Harbin, Sr. and Fred Wheatley, Jr.; and his nephew, Clint Harbin preceded him in death.
Survivors include his wife of 43 years, Patricia Wheatley Minton, Nickelsville, VA; daughter, Amy Porter and husband, Kevin, Gate City, VA; his very special granddaughter, Emily Porter, Gate City, VA; mother-in-law, Ann Wheatley, Nickelsville, VA; brothers, Paul Minton and wife, Emma, Seaman, OH, Curtis Minton and wife, Ada, Yuma, VA, Tivis Minton and wife, Wanda, New Hope, AL, Steve Minton and wife , Flo, Nickelsville, VA, and Joe Minton and wife, Wanda, Chattanooga, TN; sisters, Margie Poteat and husband, Charles, Cleveland, TN, Lola Dean, Kingsport, TN, Rosa Harrison and husband, Fred, Bristol, TN, Elaine Minton , Kingsport, TN, Debra Chapman and husband, Tony, Kingsport, TN; sister-in-law, Debbie Harbin and her son, David Harbin, Maynardville, TN; along with several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m., Thursday, November 8, 2012 at the Gate City Funeral Home and other times at the residence of Ann Wheatley. Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Brandon Berg and Rev. Joe Barber officiating. The Nickelsville Community Choir will provide the music.
Military graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Friday, November 9, 2012 by V.F.W. Post 5715, Big Stone Gap, VA assisted by members of the Virginia Army National Guard Honor Guard at Temple Hill Memorial Park, Castlewood, VA. Glen Broadwater, Ronald Wheatley, Fred Kendrick, Paul Addington, Roy Meade, and Dewane Turner will serve as pallbearers. Members of Nickelsville High School Class of 1964 will serve as honorary pallbearers.
