Orpha McConnell – Gate City, VA
Mrs. Orpha McConnell, 93, Gate City, VA, went to be with the Lord, Wednesday, July 6, 2011 at her residence with her family by her side.
Mrs. McConnell was born in Scott County, VA on February 17, 1918, the daughter of the late Conley and Martha Gillenwater Casteel. She was a member of Midway Baptist Church for 46 years.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Corbet McConnell; daughter, Mildred Frazier, an infant son, Eugene McConnell; an infant great grandson, Travis McCarty; sisters, Estelle Quillen, Elizabeth Barnett, Nellie Steffey, and Fanny Howe; and brothers, Shealey Casteel and Fred Casteel.
She is survived by her grandchildren, Sharon McCarty and husband Jeff, Gate City, VA, Lisa Davidson and husband, Kevin, Gate City, VA, and Eddie Frazier and wife, Carolyn, Gate City, VA ; great grandchildren, Makayla Gamble and Austin Frazier; sisters, Thelma Anderson and Lucille Anderson, both of Kingsport, TN; along with several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6-8p.m., Friday, July 8, 2011 at Midway Baptist Church. Funeral services will be conducted at 8:00 p.m. with Rev. George Willis, Rev. Jacob Crawford, Rev. Coy Butler, and Rev. Marvin Egan officiating. Higher Vision will provide the music.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, July 9, 2011 at McConnell Family Cemetery in the Midway community of Scott County, VA. Tommy Davidson, Will Humphreys, Luke Humphreys, Tommy Gillenwater, Chad Bailey, Tim Casteel will serve as pallbearers. Jay Gillenwater, Clyde Gillenwater, David Alley, Don Quillen, Doug Humphreys, Gene McConnell, Robert H. Wilson, and O.B. Anderson will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Family and friends are asked to meet at Midway Baptist Church at 10:15 a.m. to go in procession to the graveside service.
The family wishes to convey their special thanks to Melissa Stanley, her hospice nurse whom she dearly loved and to Doris Wheatley, who was her caregiver for their love and care of Mrs. McConnell.
