Martha Evelyn Corder McConnell, 83, Dungannon, VA passed away, Wednesday, January 28, 2009 at her residence with her loving family members by her side.
Mrs. McConnell was born in Excedar, VA on February 8, 1925, the daughter of the late Rev. Mack and Florence Frazier Butler. She was a member of Valley View Freewill Baptist Church, Dungannon, VA. She was a homemaker and loved and admired by all who knew her.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her first husband, Howard Corder (father of her children), four infant daughters, Mary Evelyn, Ruth Faye, Gladys Lee and Zelma Diana, her second husband, Guy McConnell, sister, Hazel Butler and brothers, Homer, John, Frank, and Rev. Paul Butler.
Surviving are her daughters, Frances Pair, Gray, TN, Doris Redden and husband, William (Bill), Matthews, NC, and Edna Bailey and husband, Richard (Dick), Church Hill, TN, son, Charles (Buck) Corder and wife, Vonda, Dungannon, VA, grandchildren, Tony Corder, Michael Corder, Pamela Kraft and Melissa Bailey, great grandchildren, Jacob Corder, Anna Marie Corder, and Clay Corder, step great granddaughter, Cassidy Hall, sister, Helen Murphy, Micaville, NC and brother, Rev. Coy Butler, Kingsport, TN along with several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m., Friday, January 30, 2009 at the Gate City Funeral Home and any time at the residence. Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. Ernie Mitchell and Dr. Todd Cassel officiating. Mike Upright will provide the music.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, January 31, 2009 at the Corder Family Cemetery, Dungannon, VA. Danny Cowden, Jesse Sergeant, Mack Quillen, Michael Corder, Tony Corder, Matthew Bailey, Ben Kraft and Terry Dockery will serve as pallbearers.
Benny Dooley, Rev. Red Salling, J.M. Dorton, Charles Osborne, George Hensley, Loyd Hillman and R.F. Quillen will serve as honorary pallbearers.
The family will be meeting at the cemetery for the graveside service. Anyone who wishes may meet at the funeral home at 10:00 a.m. to go to the cemetery.
The family of Mrs. McConnell would like to convey their very special thanks to Hospice and especially Lisa Newman, and her Home Health Nurse, Frieda Woodard, and Dr. Todd Cassel and the staff of Clinch River Health Services for their loving care.
Memorial contributions will be accepted by Valley View Freewill Baptist Church, Dungannon, VA in the name of Martha Corder McConnell.
