Gregory James McConnell, 56, Meadowview, VA passed away on Friday, April 07, 2017 at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center, Kingsport, TN.
Greg was born in Kingsport, TN on April 25, 1960 to Pia Erika (Rieden) McConnell and the late Frank Darrell McConnell.
He graduated from Gate City High School and he received his bachelors and masters degree from ETSU in Biological Sciences. He was then employed by Emory and Henry as a Biology Professor. Greg led many college trips for his students to Costa Rica where they learned Greg’s passion for herpetology. He was the proud author of the book “A Field Guide to the Snakes of Costa Rica”.
He was a loving and caring son, brother, and uncle. He will be greatly missed.
Greg is preceded in death by his father, Frank Darrell McConnell and sister, Margaret Coleman.
Greg is survived by his mother, Pia McConnell, Gate City, VA; brothers, Stephen McConnell, Kingsport, TN and Kevin McConnell and wife, Stephanie, Gate City, VA; his aunt, Ilse Rieden, Gate City, VA; brother-in-law, Geoffrey Coleman, Gate City, VA; two nieces who he adored, Olivia McConnell and Valerie McConnell.
The family will receive friends from 5:00-7:00 p.m., Tuesday, April 11, 2017 at Gate City Funeral Home.
A private memorial service will be held, with graveside services at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, VA.
