Everett Clayton McConnell – Gate City, VA
Everett Clayton McConnell, 89, Gate City, VA passed away Sunday, October 13, 2019 at the Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center, Kingsport, TN, with his loving wife by his side.
Everett was born in Scott County, VA on February 25, 1930 to the late Guy and Helen (Lemmons) McConnell.
Upon graduation from Dungannon High School, Everett enlisted in the United States Air Force and was a Vietnam Veteran. He traveled the world and retired from the USAF after 22 years of service, but continued to work when he returned home as a corrections officer at Camp 18 in Coeburn, VA.
He was an avid game hunter, with a special love of coon hunting, and was a member of the Corn Ridge Coon Club.
In addition to his parents, his sisters, Margaret Collins and Cora Lou Beasonburg; daughter-in-law, Melissa McConnell; and son-in-law, Michael Henley preceded him in death.
He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Jackie McConnell, of the home; children; Michael McConnell, Gate City, VA, Kim Henley, Kingsport, TN, and Scott McConnell, Gate City, VA; grandchildren, Victoria Matlock (Matthew), Amanda Basham (Josh), and granddaughter/daughter by love, whom he raised since birth, Jaclyn McConnell (Bart); great grandchildren, Chloe Basham, Heaven McConnell, Matthea Matlock, Keagan Couch, Kimber Bailey, and Novalee Bailey; and his special great grandson and best friend, Garrett Basham; sisters, Mary Bell Williams (Arthur), Gate City, VA, Rena Bolas (Jerome), Kingsport, TN; brother, Bill McConnell (Peggy), Gate City, VA; along with several nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of friends; with special friends, Tanner Hall, Larry Bowen, Darrell Gardner, and David Sampson.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date at the Nottingham United Methodist Church, Hiltons, VA with the Rev. Bill Porter officiating.
