Anabel Shawkey McConnell, MD – Johnson City, TN
Anabel Shawkey McConnell, 101, resident of Appalachian Christian Village passed away, Tuesday, July 28, 2015.
Dr. McConnell was born in Charleston, West Virginia on October 8, 1913. She was the daughter of Dr. Arthur A. Shawkey and Anna Work Shawkey. She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Frederick Gray McConnell and her siblings, Dr. Arthur Shawkey and Eloise S. Harvey.
Dr. McConnell was a graduate of the Medical College of Virginia and Marshall University. As Scott County’s first female doctor, she practiced family medicine in Gate City, Virginia and later of the medical staff at Holston Ordinance Works.
Dr. McConnell enjoyed cooking, gardening, bird watching, books, and fine needlework. She was a member of the Sullivan County Medical Association and active in the Long Island Chapter of DAR for more than 47 years. She was honored by the Appalachian Girl Scout Council for her service on the Board of Directors.
She is survived by three daughters, Mary Anabel H. Honsinger (Chip), Lexington, VA, Fredericka M. Holcombe (Alan), Beech Mountain, NC, Kay White (Andy), Gray, TN, and health care companion, Robbin Metcalf. Grandchildren are George D. Huger, Frederick Huger, and Anne Scott H. Remington, all of Lexington, VA, Art Huger, Hoboken, NJ, Carl Frederick Marquardt, Beech Mountain, NC, Thomas Richard Marquardt, Chicago, IL, and Hunter White Lange, Johnstown, CO; Great Grandchildren are Shannon Huger, Anna Marquardt, Gray Huger, Anderson Huger, Everette Huger, Isabelle Huger, Hope Huger, Grace Lange, Abby Lange, Sadie Remington, Sydney Remington, Regan Huger, and great great granddaughter, Ava Huger. The youngest great grandchild born in Anabel’s 100th year is Anabel Elizabeth Huger.
After her husband’s death, she moved from the Rotherwood property that they had conserved and in 2009 became a resident of Appalachian Christian Village in Johnson City, TN. Robbin Metcalf, Sue Clark and Mable Calhoun of Care Central provided special care for her for over 10 years and it has been a comfort to the family that she chose these three women to help her. The care she received from the staff of Appalachian Christian Village nursing unit is also truly appreciated.
Graveside services will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Monday, August 3, 2015 at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, VA.
Family will receive friends from 12 - 1 p.m., Saturday, August 15, 2015 at Gate City Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at1:00 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Dr. J. Andrew White officiating.
