Cecil McClelland – Gate City, VA
Raymond Cecil McClelland, 89, Gate City, VA passed away, Saturday, November 1, 2014 at NOVA Health and Rehab, Weber City, VA.
Born September 11, 1925 in Scott County, VA, he was the only son Marcus Lafayette and Mae Blair McClelland. He was a 1943 graduate of Shoemaker High School.
After graduation he entered the United States Army and served with the Army Engineers at the Battle of the Bulge and in the occupation of Germany during World War II. After being discharged from the Army, he went to work at the Kingsport Press and was employed there until retirement in 1987.
In addition to his parents, his wife of 66 years, Gene McLain McClelland preceded him in death in 2013.
Mr. McClelland was a member of the First Baptist Church of Gate City since the early 1950’s, where he served as a Deacon. He was a fifty plus year member of the Gate City Odd Fellows Lodge #170 and had served as an officer. He was also very active with the Scott County Democratic Committee, serving as County Chairman and as a State Committee member for many years.
He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Kathy McClelland, Gate City, VA; grandsons, Matthew McClelland and wife, Melissa, Raleigh, NC and Adam McClelland and friend, Gigi Carpenter, Knoxville, TN; great grandson, Carter McClelland, Raleigh, NC; sister, Hazel McClelland Carter, Gate City, VA; and niece, Phyllis Bellamy and husband, Wayne, Gate City, VA.
The family will receive friends from 4-6 p.m., Wednesday, November 5, 2014 at the Gate City Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 6:00 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Pastor Andy Barnes and Rev. Jeff DeBoard officiating.
Military graveside services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, November 6, 2014 at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, VA by the American Legion Post # 3, Kingsport, TN and Post #265, Gate City, VA assisted by members of the Virginia Army National Guard Honor Guard. Members of the First Baptist Church of Gate City and family friends will serve as pallbearers. Members of the Odd Fellows Lodge #170 will serve as honorary pallbearers.
