Gene McLain McClelland, 83, of Gate City, VA, passed away Saturday, April 13, 2013 at Indian Path Medical Center, Kingsport, TN.
Born May 23, 1929 in the Stanley Valley section of Hawkins County, TN, she was the only daughter of Bethel H. and Mary Etta Charles McLain. She was a 1946 graduate of Church Hill High School.
After graduation she worked at the Kingsport Press where she met her husband of 66 years, Raymond Cecil McClelland. She became a mother and homemaker and started a life of volunteerism serving as a PTA officer, Little League Mother and community worker. In 1961, she began using her writing talent to become a newspaper reporter. Gene worked first for the Scott County Herald and then the Kingsport Times-News and retired from Bristol Herald-Courier. She served as a feature writer and Southwest Virginia correspondent. Her love of writing continued into this decade when an essay she wrote won state, regional and national awards in a DAR essay contest.
She was a member of First Baptist Church of Gate City since the early 1950's where she served as a Sunday School teacher until December 2012. As a member of Carter's Fort Chapter Daughters of American Revolution and Elijah Cross II Chapter, Daughter of 1812 she was able to celebrate her American patriots and her hobby of genealogy. She was also a 50+ year member of the Rebecca Lodge of the Oddfellows.
Mrs. McClelland is survived by her husband, Cecil McClelland, Gate City, VA; son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Kathy McClelland, Gate City, VA; grandsons, Matthew McClelland and wife, Melissa, Raleigh, NC and Adam McClelland, Knoxville, TN; great grandson, Carter McClelland, Raleigh, NC; sister-in-law, Hazel McClelland Carter, Gate City, VA; niece, Phyllis Bellamy and husband, Wayne, Gate City, VA; and special cousin, Mary Alice McClellan, Gate City, VA.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m., Tuesday, April 16, 2013 at the First Baptist Church of Gate City. Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m.in the church sanctuary with Pastor Andy Barnes and Rev. Jeff DeBoard officiating.
Graveside services will be conducted at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 17, 2013 at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, VA. Matt McClelland, Adam McClelland, David Odham, Stan Rogers, Robb Perry, and Aaron Edens will serve as pallbearers.
Family and friends are asked to meet at the cemetery for the graveside service.
