Peggy McClellan – Gate City, VA
Peggy Mozella McClellan was born February 26, 1931 and passed away June 12, 2014 in the company of her family.
She was a teacher, homemaker, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, Den mother, Girl Scout Leader, Chair of the All District Committee and a very active non-member of the Gate City Civitan Club. She worked on many projects but her latest and favorite Civitan project was the Grogan Park Memorial Friends Fund to support the park in Gate City.
She and her husband, Hubert, kept the nursery at Gate City United Methodist Church for several years. They also worked on many civic projects including the Gate City High School Band Boosters, the Civitan Horseshow, and the Civitan Fiddler’s Convention.
As a mother of six children, Peggy was able to use her college degree in Home Economics to manage their large household. Peggy and Hubert’s passion inspired their children to get involved in Upward People, an International Youth Movement during the 1960’s, but also to pursue college degrees in a variety of fields including engineering, business and education. That inspiration was carried on by the next generation where five of their seven grandchildren have completed college degrees and the remaining two are near completion.
In recent years, she was always accompanied by their white poodle, Abby, who is lovingly called their seventh child. Their four great grandchildren have provided a never ending source of joy for Peggy and Hubert.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Forest and Mabel Chapman, her sisters and their husbands, Cornie and James Cornet and Louise and Everett Robinson; her brother, Ray Chapman and an infant brother, McKenzie Chapman; her nephew, Anthony “Goose” Chapman; great nephew, Eddie Shell and great niece, Debbie Shell Roberts.
