Betty Jo McClain - Gate City, VA

Betty Jo McClain, 78, of the Nottingham Community in Gate City, VA, went to be with her Heavenly Father peacefully surrounded by her family at 7:07p.m., Friday, May 18, 2018.
Betty was an avid UT and Gate City Blue Devil fan. She loved to fish on her family farm, especially with her fishing buddy, Jeremy Farley. She also enjoyed sitting on the front porch with friends and family sharing memories with her great-great nieces and nephews.
She worked at the Kingsport Press in the early years of her life. She was the owner of Nottingham Grocery up until she began to work at the Kroger Company where she worked her way to Head of the Deli Department where she retired after two decades of service. She also served on the Scott County PSA Water Board and was a member of the Republican Party Council of Scott County.
Betty is preceded in death by her parents Whitt and Monnie McClain; three sisters, Ann, Sue, and Linda; and an infant brother and sister. She is also preceded in death by nieces Stephanie Hammonds and Melissa McConnell.
She is survived by her sister, Jacqueline McConnell (Everett); several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews, whom she treated as her own children; special nieces Patricia Taylor, Jaclyn McConnell, and Whitney Housewright; along with her special friend and sister by love, Reba O’Keefe.
A celebration of life will be held at Nottingham United Methodist Church on Saturday, May 26, 2018. The visitation will be from 1:00 p.m.-3:00 p.m. with the service following at 3:00 p.m. with Rev. Bill Porter officiating.
Burial will take place immediately following the services at the Gardner Family Cemetery in Hiltons, VA.
Pallbearers will be: Robbie Hammond, Hunter Hammonds, Zack Hammond, Josh Basham, Garrett Basham, Bart Bishop, and Michael Smith. Honorary Pallbearers will be: Everett McConnell, Mike McConnell, Scott McConnell, Rickey Quillen, and Isahiah Mirahabibi.
The family would like to thank everyone for the kind thoughts, calls, and prayers. Special thanks to the amazing nurses at HVMC, ICU 5th floor, and extra thanks to all the wonderful members of the Nottingham United Methodist Church.
