Edith S. Mays – Nickelsville, VA
Edith S. Mays, 90, Nickelsville, VA went to be with her Lord and Savior, Monday, July 21, 2014 at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.
Mrs. Mays was born in Dickenson County, VA on April 12, 1924, the daughter of the late John and Ethel Kiser Sutherland.
She lived life to the fullest, healthy and productive to the end. She enjoyed volunteering with Mountain Empire Older Citizens (MEOC) and being active in the Nickelsville Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star (OES), Nickelsville Senior Citizens, and the First Baptist Church of Nickelsville.
In addition to her parents, her husband, J. Curtis Mays; sisters, Nannie Sutherland and Bonnie Neice; and brothers, Dockie, Bobby, Earnest, Bert, Grey, Woodrow, Pridemore, McNeil, J. C., and Floyd Sutherland preceded her in death.
She is survived by her daughter, Donna Gillenwater and husband, Justin, Gate City, VA; son, James Lowell Mays, Lexington, KY; granddaughter, Chelsea Gillenwater; grandsons, Jordan Gillenwater, Brandon Mays, and Shane Bright; great grandson, Axel Mays; along with several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m., Wednesday, July 23, 2014 at the First Baptist Church of Nickelsville. An EOS service will be conducted at 7:45 p.m. conducted by members of the Nickelsville chapter of the EOS. Funeral services will follow conducted by Rev. Steve Collins and Rev. Mike Patrick. Jack Troutman, Sabra Collins, and the Nickelsville First Baptist Choir will provide the music.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, July 24, 2014 at the Grassy Creek Cemetery, Castlewood, VA. Bobby Hillman, Doyle Smith, Curtis Laney, Larry Moore, Larry Culbertson, and Aaron Hillman will serve as pallbearers. Thomas Hillman, Henry Powers, Danny Dixon, and Pete Odle will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Family and friends are asked to meet at Nickelsville First Baptist Church at 10:30 a.m. to go in procession to the graveside service.
