Charlie Mays Sr., Castlewood, VA passed away peacefully at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center after an extended illness. Mr. Mays was born August 14, 1934 in Clintwood Va. Charlie spent many years in the Kingsport and Fall Branch area.
He is the son to the late Fredrick McKinley Mays and Susie Edna Watson Mays Gammons. He is proceeded in death by brothers, Fred Jr., Roy, Johnny, Frankie and Billy Joe; sisters Hattie D. Collins Eller, Marjorie Marie, and Hettie Loraine Mays. Special sister in law “Sister” Janet Lee Marshall; infant granddaughter Brittany Mays.
He is survived by his wife Beulah Jean Carter Mays, daughters; Peggy Mays Rowland, Limestone, TN, Linda Burnes (Butch) Kingsport, Whitefield, Maine, Charlie “Sam” Mays Jr., Fred “Pete” Mays (Amanda Collins); Grandchildren, Danielle “Red” (Dustin) Lynch, Bailyton, Robert Rowland, Bluff City, Kristie Rowland, Limestone, TN, Dustin (Jemima) Rowland, Stoney Creek, Alex McKinley (Ashley Overstreet), Bristol, Benjamin McKinley (Melanie Jackson) Gate City, Christopher Mays; Sister, Birdie Sue Puckett, Kingsport, Tn; Great Grandchildren, Cydney and Kieana Forney, Stoney Creek, Matilda Salyer, Stoney Creek, Allie and Gage Rowland, Stoney Creek, Sabrinia Rowland, Limestone TN, Landon Barnes, Gate City, VA; Numerous Nieces and Nephews and extended family and friends.
Charlie was a former truck driver owned and Operated Mays Landscaping, Metro Security both in Kingsport, TN. A-1 Pipe and Muffler Elizabethton and Snowflake Auction. Charlie loved to coon hunt, farm, garden and he truly enjoyed spending time with family. He loved to spoil his grandchildren “Paw Charlie.” He never met a stranger and could pull the shyest child out of their shell. Charlie never met a Ford truck he didn’t like.
Pallbearers will be family and friends. Services will be held Saturday, October 24, at Gate City Funeral Home in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel, Gate City, VA. Calling hours will be from 11 am to 1:00 pm with services to follow at 1:00 p.m. Following the service, burial will take Place in Rye Cove Va in the Fields Family Cemetery “The Ridge.” Jr. Mullins will officiate the service with music by long time friend and family members Mike Taylor and Tim Smith. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the family in care of Gate City Funeral Home.
