Richard W. “Mutt” Marshall – Nickelsville, VA
Richard Wayne “Mutt” Marshall, 69, Nickelsville, VA passed away, Saturday, April 26, 2014 at Indian Path Medical Center after a brief illness.
Richard was born in Nickelsville, VA January 1, 1945. He was the youngest of four children born to Clyde and Victoria Marshall. He graduated from Nickelsville High School in 1963.
He was an employee of Kingsport Press in Kingsport with 33 years of distinguished service.
Richard worshipped and was an active member at Sabra Chapel Church in Nickelsville. A lifelong community servant, Richard was an active member of the Twin Springs High School Athletic Booster Club for many years. Known for his sense of humor and ability to tell a story, he was a lover of University of Kentucky basketball, Carl Edwards, bluegrass music, and peanut butter.
He is preceded in death by the love of his life, his wife, Polly Irene Marshall; brother, Robert “Bob” Marshall, and his parents.
He is survived by his daughters, Penny Hurd and husband, Sam, Kingsport, TN, Amy Morefield and husband, Jeff, Nickelsville, VA, Tina West and husband, Rocky, Nickelsville, VA, and Joy Hurd and husband, Michael, Rogersville, TN; grandchildren, Lindsay Farmer and husband, Brandon, Piney Flats, TN, Dalton Collins, Washington, District of Columbia, Richie, Grace, and Katie Morefield, Nickelsville, VA, Elijah and Josiah Hurd, Rogersville, TN, and Nehemiah West, Nickelsville, VA; great grandchild, Abby Farmer, Piney Flats, TN; a very special niece, Cindy Salyer, Hanahan, SC; sisters, Ruth Slover and husband, James, Morristown, TN and Louise Salyer and husband, Harold, Nickelsville, VA; along with several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m., Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at the Gate City Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, May 1, 2014 in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Brother Arville Dingus officiating. A eulogy will be given by Gil Salyer.
Burial will follow the service at Point Truth Cemetery, Nickelsville, VA. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers. Elders and Deacons of Sabra Chapel Church will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Friends are invited to gather at Nickelsville Ruritan Club following the graveside service.
