George Carson Maddux, 77, Gate City, VA
George Carson Maddux, born November 18, 1941 in Kingsport, TN, left his earthly life Wednesday afternoon due to complications from a recent fall.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Audrey Ison Maddux and Howard C. Maddux, and his beloved daughter, Erica Lynn Maddux.
He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Carolyn Ann Musick Maddux, who cared for him daily and refused to leave his side until the end; his daughters, Sherri Dee Pierson and Tracy Maddux Gaylor and husband Jay Gaylor; and 3 grandsons, Tanner Dean, Evan Dean, and Connor Pierson of Gate City.
Raised in Scott County, he was a 1960 graduate of Gate City High School. A gifted storyteller, he loved to regale family and friends with tales of his glory days as a Defensive Tackle for the Blue Devils. After graduating from ETSU in 1965, he started his career as a teacher and coach for Scott County Public Schools and received his Master of Education from Union College in 1975. At the age of 36, he decided to attend Ohio Northern University’s Claude W. Pettit School of Law, often bragging that he had the lowest undergraduate GPA of any first-year law student in the country.
After passing the Virginia Bar, he began a successful career as an attorney in Scott, Lee, and Wise counties of Virginia in 1980; and, as a lifelong Democrat, served as Scott County’s Commonwealth Attorney from 1988-1992 and again from 1994-1996. He served as a substitute judge for Virginia’s 30th Judicial District. He also served as legal counsel for the Scott County Telephone Co-op.
The family will receive friends at Gate City Funeral Home Sunday, November 10, 2019 at 2:00 p.m., with a memorial service to follow. His great nephew, Bro. Matthew Lawson, will lead the service, with music provided by Don and Wilma Brooks.
