Audrey Ison Maddux was born at home in Scott County, VA on February 11, 1913 and died at home August 2, 2009.

She was preceded in death by her father, George W. Ison and her mother, Annie Ryder Ison.

Including her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband and the love of her life, Howard C. Maddux; sisters, Clara Ison Bledsoe and Georgia Ison Busic; brothers, Silas "Bud" Ison and Edward Ison and her beloved granddaughter, Erica Lynn Maddux.

She was a long time member of the First Baptist Church of Gate City, VA.

She is survived by her son, George C. Maddux and wife, Carolyn A. Musick Maddux, Gate City, VA; grandchildren, Sherri Pierson, Gate City, VA, Tracy Karen Maddux, Roanoke, VA; three great grandsons, Tanner Dean, Evan Dean and Conner Pierson; two nephews, Len Busic and Eldridge Busic; one niece, Cynthia Ison Cecil.

She graduated from Berea College, where she worked her way through school and was a brilliant student.

Her first job was as a social worker in rural Kentucky where much of her work was assisting isolated families traveling on sometimes non-existent roads by horse and mule; Once, near dark, while riding a mule, fearing that she could not remount, she rode him across a long, high railroad tressel.

Her first automobile was a Model A Ford.

She returned to Scott County during the great depression as a school teacher where she often taught several grades in a one room school and would often have to board in the community in which she was teaching.

Her teaching career spanned some 30 years and ended as a social studies teacher at Gate City High School when she retired in 1977.

She lived a simple life enjoying gardening, sewing and family life. She was an avid reader and worked the daily crossword puzzle to the very end of her life.

Her lovely loving daughter-in-law, Carolyn A. Maddux cared for her 24 hours a day and 7 days a week in her last declining weeks, so that she could remain at home, which was her wish, with no complaint from either of them.

The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, August 5, 2009 at Gate City Funeral Home. Services will be at 7 p.m. in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Rev. Paul Blessing, and, Rev. Jeff DeBoard officiating. Music will be provided by Don and Wilma Brooks and Carolyn Maddux.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, August 6, 2009 at Holston View Cemetery. The family will meet at 12:15 p.m. at the funeral home to go in procession to the cemetery.

Pallbearers will be Tanner Dean, Evan Dean, Connor Pierson, Bill Flanary, Edisol Musick and Willie Mack Musick.

Honorary pallbearers will be Eldridge Busic, Len Busic, Mark Cecil, Paul Lane, Johnny Musick, Henry Dee Jennings and Don Brooks.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the First Baptist Church of Gate City, VA Benevolence Fund.
