Ray Everett Leonard, 82, Hiltons, VA passed away, Monday, January 30, 2012 at Wellmont Holston Valley Medical Center.
Mr. Leonard was born in Scott County, VA on July 18, 1929, the son of the late Washington Conley Leonard and Bernice Larkey Jennings.
He retired from Eastman Kodak as a Research Chemist, served in United States Air Force during the Korean War, was a member of Mt. Vernon United Methodist Church, the Masonic Lodge of Mendota, VA, and the Shriner's Kazim Temple of Kingsport, TN.
In addition to his parents, his son, Chris Leonard, sisters, Helen and Pauline Shaffer; and brothers, Gerald and Maurice Leonard preceded him in death.
He is survived by his wife, Helen LaForce Leonard, Hiltons, VA; daughters, Karen Thompson and husband, Larry, Berea, KY, Denise Harris, Gate City, VA, and Kim Kyst and husband, Paul, Jefferson, GA; son, Ray Leonard, Jr. and wife, Lisa, Gate City, VA; grandchildren, Darren Parker and wife, Heather, Tyler Thompson and wife, Jenn, Mike Harris and wife, Emily, Shannon Hartsock and husband, Jason, Brittany Leonard, Chelsea Kyst, and Christian Kyst great grandchildren, Alexandria, Evan, Christopher, Stephen, and Grace; sister, Doris Pearman, Bristol, VA; brother, Larry Leonard and wife, Joyce, Jonesborough, TN; along with several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m., Thursday, February 2, 2012 at the Gate City Funeral Home and other times at the residence. Funeral services will be conducted at 7:00 p.m., in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with the Rev. Will Shewey and the Rev. Don Hanshew officiating. Pine Grove Harmony will provide the music.
Graveside services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, February 3, 2012 at Oak Hill Memorial Gardens. Greg Leonard, Jody Leonard, Willis Shaffer, Lynn Shaffer, Rick Shaffer, Gary Leonard, Cecil Hall, and Mark Shaffer will serve as pallbearers. Pat Henry, Carl Salyers, Bird Blackburn, Johnny Wolfe, and Donnie Mann will serve as honorary pallbearers.
Special thanks to Dr. Casey and Darlene, and also his caregivers while he was at home, Ruth Russell, Carmen Taylor, and Pam Whitt.
