Lawrence Payne, 73, Blackwater, VA, passed away, Monday, January 29, 2024, at his residence. 

Lawrence was born in Scott County, VA, on February 20, 1950, to the late Daniel Boone Payne and Della (Barnette) Payne. 

In addition to his parents, his sisters, Lorraine Payne, Wanda Reynolds; and brothers, Clarence Payne and Carson Payne preceded him in death. 

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 51 years, Sharon Payne; daughter, Joy Lane, Blackwater, VA; sons, Chris Payne, Duffield, VA, and Stevie Payne (Valdenia), Mt. Carmel, TN; sisters, Diana Osborne, Duffield, VA, Marcella Beverly, Zion, IL, Leona Minor (Luther), Duffield, VA, Loretta Trammell (Ricky), Union, SC, Nell Bowen (Lon), Blackwater, VA, Rebecca Shockey, (Wendell), Blackwater, VA, Karen Warren (Doug), Blackwater, VA; brother, Tommy Payne, Blackwater, VA; grandchildren, Lesha Payne, Amy Sowards, Amber Payne, Zoe Payne, Nick & Shawna Clifton; special grandson, Richard Lawrence Lane; 7 great-grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-laws, Bob Tomlinson (Sharon), Gail Nickles, Debbie (Gary) Hood, Fran Tomlinson, Shanna (Matt) Johnson; and a host of nieces and nephews. 

The family will receive friends from 5-7p.m., Thursday, February 1, 2024, at the Gate City Funeral Home. Services will be conducted at 7:00p.m., in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with Evangelist Garry Hood and Rev. Jackie Frazier officiating. The Hood Family and Matthew Vanzant will provide the music. 

Graveside services will be conducted at 2:00p.m., Friday, February 2, 2024, at the Payne Family Cemetery, Dry Creek Rd, Blackwater, VA. Family and friends are asked to meet at the funeral home at 1:00p.m., to go in procession to the graveside service. 

Chris Payne, Stevie Payne, Richie Lane, Josh Payne, Mason Hardin, Matthew Hardin, Doug Bailey, Nathan Hood, and Preston Chadwell will serve as pallbearers. Bob Tomlinson, Jerry Legg, Jon Holmes, Tommy Payne, and Luther Minor will serve as honorary pallbearers. 

The family would like to give special thanks to Ashley with Caris Hospice, as well as all of the family for their love and support. 

Following graveside services, family and friends are invited to drop by the residence of Tom Payne for food, fellowship, and the celebration of life of dad.
