Robert Lee Lane, 89, beloved Daddy, Papa, Great Papa, brother, and friend to all who knew him began his new life in the eternal presence of his Lord and Savior, Jesus, Sunday, July 24, 2011.
Mr. Lane was born in Scott County, VA on November 16, 1921, son of the late Hopkins Charles and Lakie Harris Lane.
He was preceded in death by the love of his life, his wife of 51 years, Lovely, and his beloved son, Steve.
He was also preceded in death by his parents, Hopkins and Lakie Lane, sister, Rosie Thompson, and brothers, Henry, Leonard, Gene and Ray.
He retired from Tennessee Eastman with 40 years of service and also enjoyed and loved his farm and his land.
He was a veteran of World War II having served in the army with Co C 796th MP BN in England, France, Belgium, Scotland, and the Netherlands from May 1943 to February 1946. He fought in the battle of Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge. Throughout his life he practiced the virtues of honesty, hard work, good humor, self-education, responsibility, compassion, and devotion to his Lord, his family, his country, and his employer. He was an avid fisherman and hunter, and loved walking in the forest.
Surviving are his daughter, Carol and son-in-law, Art Ford, Clemmons, NC; daughter-in-law, Barbara Lane, Kingsport, TN; grandchildren, Miranda Lane, Kingsport, TN, Ruth Tilley and husband, Joey, Knightdale, NC, and Mark Ford and wife, Miki, Suwanee, GA; great grandchildren, Jack and Asher Ford, Suwanee, GA and Amanda Tilley, Knightdale, NC; also, great grandson, Preston Tilley, scheduled to be born August 1, 2011; sister, Kathleen Williams and husband, Wilford, Copper Creek community of Gate City, VA; along with many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6-9 p.m., Tuesday, July 26, 2011 at the Gate City Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 27 2011 in the Gene Falin Memorial Chapel of the funeral home with his nephew, Rev. Cecil Kern, Rev. Mack Sanders, and his son-in-law, Art Ford officiating. The Upward Way Quartet will provide the music.
Military graveside rites will follow the services at Holston View Cemetery, Weber City, VA, where he will be placed beside his beloved wife, Lovely and their son, Steve, conducted by the American Legion Hammond Post #3 of Kingsport, TN and Post #265 of Gate City, VA assisted by members of the Virginia Army National Guard Honor Guard. Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.
Flowers may be given or memorials may be made to Scott County Life Saving Crew, Gate City, VA or Duffield Life Saving Crew, Duffield, VA. Special thanks to Pauline and Will Ramey and their family for loving our Dad and taking care of him. Also, special thanks to Clemmons Village in Clemmons, NC for their Christ-centered, loving care. Also, special thanks to Scott County life-saving crew and to Duffield Life-Saving Crew for the services you provided our family; also Chris Kimbler and the neighbors who helped my dad so much in the loss of our Mom and Steve.
A special thanks also to my Mom's family who always loved Daddy and ministered to him after the loss of my Mom and Steve and were there for him during his four strokes. Also, a special tribute in memory of his brother, Gene, who was so faithful in helping Daddy. Also, a special thanks to friends and staff at Calvary Baptist Church, Winston-Salem, NC, who have ministered to Daddy and to the family in so many ways.
