James Lane
Kingsport, TN | September 25, 2011
KINGSPORT – James E. (Edward) Lane, age 83, Kingsport, went to be with The Lord at 1:20 a.m. Sunday following a brief illness.
Born in Rye Cove, VA, he met and married the love of his life, Agnes Fields Lane, following a time of service to his country. A short time later, the couple moved to Kingsport where their only son, Eddie was born the next year.
Fifty six years ago, James went to work at Phillips Furniture Company in Weber City, VA, where he met a salesman named Lee Smith. Soon after Lee opened Rhoton and Smith Furniture Company, James went to work there, where he has been employed for the last 47 years.
James was very proud to be a veteran of the U.S. Army, and served our country in the Korean War. In 1960, James accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Saviour. Soon afterwards, the family started attending Pendleton's Free Will Baptist Church, located in Ft. Blackmore, VA. This is the same church that he and Agnes have attended for all these years.
Shortly after he accepted Christ, he met and became close friends with "The Cooke Duet", a gospel singing husband and wife from Wise, VA. Over the next several years, James and his family spent nearly every weekend traveling with the Cookes to churches all across the region.
In 1970, he and Hubert Cooke started an annual all day Gospel Sing that grew to become the largest event of its kind in the country at that time... the Greenland Park Gospel Sing. At it's peak in the early 1990's, the Greenland Park Gospel Sing was known to draw estimated crowds in excess of 10,000. Through the promotion of this event, James became well known to artists and fans throughout the world of Southern and Bluegrass Gospel Music. James Lane often said that the best friends he had ever made in this life were the ones he made through Gospel Music.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Hobart and Kate Lane.
Surviving are his faithful companion of 58 years, Agnes Fields Lane; son, Eddie Lane of Kingsport; Daughter in law, who he considered to be more like a daughter, Janey Lane; His precious grandchildren, Mandi Anderson, Justin Lane, Rebeka Lane and Abbey Lane and his "grandson by marriage", Mandi's husband, Derek Anderson; sister, Mabel Dingus and husband, Audley, Ft. Blackmore, VA; brothers, Orbin Lane Gate City, VA and Claude Lane and wife. Sally, Ft. Blackmore, VA.; along with several nieces and nephews.
But James also had a large "extended family". Besides his biological family, he is also survived by some very special, very close friends who, after 49 years of loyal, loving friendship are really much more than just friends, the Cookes; Hubert and Jeanette, their sons, James, Ronnie and Donnie and all of their wives and kids.
Other extended family members include the dear friends he worked alongside for all these years... Lee and Dorcas Smith, Aaron Smith and Arvella Smith Lane.
Calling hours are from 5 to 7 p.m. at main chapel of Gate City Funeral Home in Gate City, VA. The funeral service will follow visitation and will be officiated by Rev. Kevin Sanders, Pastor of Pendleton's Free Will Baptist Church. Music will be provided by The Singing Cookes, The McGlothlins and the quartet from Pendleton's Church.
Burial will follow graveside services at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Holston View Cemetery. Military honors will be accorded by the American Legion.
